Scanning "failed to open scan channel:" Device busy

Asked by Joppe

Having read articles #30449 and #56866 I'm having a feeling that this may refer to same problem.

Using an HP OfficeJet R45. Works fine to print on, but fails with scanning.

Downloaded latest HPLIP, compiled and installed, same error.
Running system Ubuntu 8.04.

Any suggestions?

The printer used is an R45, but the one in setup is an R40. This probably wont matter since the only differences I have found is that one of them (R40) is american and the other (R45) is European.

/var/log/messages says the same as hp-check.

For the convenience I set (group)permissions friendly while debugging.

But scanning remains unavailable.

Had the printer earlier connected to on older PC-hardware with same distro (Ubuntu 8.04) and worked fine with both scanning and printing, but then with HPOJ... But, that is now gone. Both HPOJ and the computer... =(

Carl,

Scanning -should- work over parallel. However the OfficeJet R45 has reached "Full (End of support)". You can get more information about the support levels for this device here:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/officejet/officejet_r45.html

We are no longer testing or providing technical assistance with this product. However looking over your hp-check I don't see any errors that would stop scanning from working..you could check in the BIOS to be sure that your parallel is configured correctly?

Sorry I couldn't give you any better direction!

Aaron

Thank you for rapid answer =)

At least we both agree on that the setup is made proper to what we know to be a working way.

Now, one way could be to uninstall HP LIP and install HPOJ. That worked with this printer and the same distribution (Ubuntu 8.04).

But, the hardware is not the same, so it may or may not work just because of that.

Since the low level system somehow reports "Device busy", this may very well be the case that the hardware just wont do it.

Due to the physical environment (and the fact that the old computer died) I wanted to connect it on the computer I'm working on. Which is a pretty new Dell PowerEdge T105. This motherboard however lacks parallel port, so I bought one... A long story short: the only card I found that could work is a "DSP-1000" PCIe (Parallel + dual serial) The port is recognized and works well for the printer, including the toolbox display/status functions. So somehow the hardware IS working. But not scanning.

The questions arising now, are
1. What are the requirements for the parport to have HPLIP working? ECP/EPP? Other?
2. Since the scanner channel gets a Device Busy error, does that mean that some kind of fight for the port happened?
3. Not knowing much of the lowlevel system, what could report the busy signal, how to debug it?

Is there any known parallel port cards to work with this scanner?

I'm now trying to find the right approach and action to the problem...

Thank you
/Carl

For information on troubleshooting parallel you can go here:

http://hplipopensource.com/node/217

Usually device busy means that the device isn't either sending a busy status code or is not responding correctly to an HPLIP status request.

For lower level troubleshooting you may want to refer to your linux distro documentation. If there is a hardware or kernel problem we can't assist in troubleshooting.

It's possible that the third party parallel port card is not allowing the correct type of communication--we don't test on these devices so I don't have any suggestions on what cards might work. I do know however that in the past HP JetDirect devices that connect to a parallel connection have worked with scanning and printing over the network.

HP JetDirect 500X is one model I've tested on several years ago. However our technical support for parallel is limited at this point because of the age of the device, etc.

Hope this helps!

Aaron
