Can PPD of new HPLIP work with old HPLIP

Asked by rjpa123

I'm trying to get the a PPD (hp-officejet_j4500_series-hpijs.ppd) from hplip version 2.8.2 to work with my current SLED 10 SP2 setup (cups v1.1.23 and hplip 1.7.2). I only need printing. Trying to add the PPD via YAST works with the following changes:
a) Changed the list of "*Product" entries to a single *Product: "(OfficeJet j4500 series)" in two parts of the file
b) Changed "*PCFileName: "hp-officejet_j4500_series-hpijs.ppd" to *PCFileName: "HPIJS.PPD"
c) Changed "*ShortNickName: "HP Officejet j4500 series Foomatic/hpijs, hpijs 2.8.7.4"" to "*ShortNickName: "HP Officejet j4500 series""

When trying to print, I get the following error:
E [22/Mar/2009:22:00:58 +0000] PID 8743 stopped with status 22!
E [22/Mar/2009:22:00:58 +0000] [Job 49049] Print file was not accepted (client-error-bad-request)!
E [22/Mar/2009:22:00:58 +0000] PID 8744 stopped with status 1!

Am I trying to do the impossible?
If possible, can you help me.
Please and thank you.

This may work but we don't test this and you may encounter problems. Is it possible for you to install the latest HPLIP? If you only need to print you can install custom and install HPIJS only for printing only.

Thanks.

The OJ j4500 is a DJGenericVIP device class which is supported in hplip 1.7.2. Just go into CUPS admin (localhost:631) and select the PPD for any printer that belongs to the same DJGenericVIP device class. For example select the Deskjet 5100 PPD.

The /usr/share/hplip/data/models/model.dat displays all the device classes (ie: tech-class) for each printer model.

Thank you very much, Mr. Dave.

I chose the Deskjet 5550 PPD and it worked!

I owe you one.
