HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fw Requires Plugin?

Asked by Michael Armijo

Hey there,
I'm trying to set up my new HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fw on my computer running Debian 9.0 "Stretch". On the HPLIP Open Source website, it states that this series of printers don't need a plugin, and the hp-setup utility installs the driver without prompting for a plugin.

However, when I go to print, it errors out with the following, and CUPS shows that the filter failed:

Jul 8 10:08:09 edc2-final2 hpcups[3968]: common/utils.c 69: unable to open /var/lib/hp/hplip.state: No such file or directory
Jul 8 10:08:09 edc2-final2 hpcups[3968]: common/utils.c 119: validate_plugin_version() Failed to get Plugin version from [/var/lib/hp/hplip.state]
Jul 8 10:08:09 edc2-final2 hpcups[3968]: common/utils.c 157: Plugin version is not matching
Jul 8 10:08:09 edc2-final2 hpcups[3968]: prnt/hpcups/HPCupsFilter.cpp 486: m_Job initialization failed with error = 48
Jul 8 10:08:09 edc2-final2 hp[3969]: prnt/backend/hp.c 919: ERROR: null print job total=0

Upon installing the plugin using the hp-plugin command, the printer works as expected.
The PPD that the printer is using is HP_LaserJet_MFP_M129-M134.ppd

Does this printer actually need the plugin, or is this a bug?

Hi,

The device "HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fw" requires plug-in.
Can get the plug-in file from bellow link.

https://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/auxfiles/HP/plugins/

Thanks,
Badal

Why is it listed as NOT requiring a plugin at https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/index and it is not listed in the list of printers requiring a plugin at https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/binary_plugin.html ?

This is misleading... I'm trying to buy a printer that doesn't require proprietary drivers, and the pages above seem to assure me that I have a few options, but then when I looked at the answers and bugs sections here on Launchpad, I find that a few of those printers DO require a plugin.

Hopefully someone can amend those web pages...

I agree that the webpage should be updated if the plugin is needed, especially since I submitted this 2 years ago and it appears the site still hasn't been updated. I've recently updated to Debian Buster but haven't had a need to set up my printer yet (same printer, M130fw) so I'm not sure if the plugin is still required to get this printer working.

I would be grateful if you could test it when you have time, I am shopping for a printer and although it's not particularly urgent, it seems like I've basically exhausted all the (laser multifunction) possibilities that don't require downloading some kind of proprietary driver...

Can you help with this problem?
