Photosmart C5380 does not print on CD or DVD

Asked by gerold

I have recently acquired a Photosmart C5380 because hplip promises full support under Linux. Scanning and printing on A4 work just fine, but I have not found a way to print on CDs or DVDs yet.
On localhost:631, I have set the paper size to CD/DVD 120mm and the paper tray to CD/DVD as well.
Then I have started print jobs from gimp and glabels, but the printer always displays: "CD/DVD tray open - close it in order to print". So, I have to remove the CD carrier and flip the tray up; the printer then prints on A4 paper in a position that would fit that of the CD in the carrier.
Is there something I can do? Do I have to select a special template in glabels?

Thank you for any help!

You are not doing anything wrong. An app like glabels will help you format the image to best fit the CD. The error indicates that the printer seems to sense that the tray is not engaged. See if you can click it into place perhaps.

Thanks, but I'm quite sure that the tray is in the right place. There's a white line and arrow which indicate how far the tray must be inserted, and there's an animation in the printer's display, too. I've done it exactly the way it is demonstrated there.
It could only be inserted further by force, but the tray is too thin to take that risk ;-)
I'll try to get a laptop with windows here in order to figure out if it is a software or a hardware problem.

Please set LogLevel to debug in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, restart cups (sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart). Send your print job again and post the log output for this job from /var/log/cups/error_log, I will be able to verify if the driver is selecting the correct source tray. Specifically, I am looking for the gs command with PS:MediaPosition=14 in the gs commandline options for selecting CD/DVD tray.
If it is, then it is a hardware issue.

Last night I posted a similar message regarding the C5580 and HPLIP 3.9.2 on Ubuntu Intrepid. I'm having exactly the same problem. It's not a hardware issue. Using the old HPLIP in the Intrepid repository allowed the CD/DVD tray to work perfectly.

Here is an example output from my CUPS error log when sending a job to the CD tray. "PS:MediaPosition=14" is clearly stated there, but it's not working properly with 3.9.2.

Starting renderer with command: gs -dFirstPage=1 -q -dBATCH -dPARANOIDSAFER -dQUIET -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=ijs -sIjsServer=hpijs -dDEVICEWIDTHPOINTS=339 -dDEVICEHEIGHTPOINTS=339 -sDeviceManufacturer="HE WLETT-PACKARD" -sDeviceModel="deskjet 5600" -dDuplex=false -r300 -sIjsParams=Quality:Quality=0,Quality:ColorMode=2,Quality:MediaType=0,Quality:PenSet=2,PS:MediaPosition=14 -dIjsUseOutputFD -sOutputFile=-/var/spool/cups/tmp/foomatic-pjcYlP

I've just tested it under Windows - it works fine there, so it cannot be a hardware problem.

I've used /etc/init.d/cups restart instead of cupsys because that file does not exist.
This is the error_log:

you are selecting PaperSize to be letter and source tray to be the CD/DVD tray. These are incompatible combination. You must also select CD/DVD paper size.

Thanks for finding the problem. But: I already have selected CD/DVD 120mm as the paper size in CUPS (localhost:631). There's no way of selecting the paper size in the applications' printing dialogs with the new hplip - that's why I have installed two printer queues with different default paper sizes (A4 and CD/DVD).
It is even set to CD/DVD in the HP Device Manager. I cannot post screenshots, though :-/
That means: the paper size setting in CUPS does not affect the print job?

Check what the contents of ~/.cups/lpoptions are. remove/rename the lpoptions file and see if that fixes the problem.

Ditto with my problem too. Selecting paper size in CUPS or hp-systray has no effect. My lpoptions file has a single line in it that says "Default Photosmart_C5500". I'm not at home right now to test removing it.

This is the content of the lpoptions file:

Dest Photosmart_C5300_A4 PageSize=CDDVD120 PrintoutMode=Normal InputSlot=CDDVDTray

Removing it did not help, the printer still wants me to close the CD tray.

I've just installed hplip 2.8.12 instead of 3.9.2. This is better, it tries to print and pulls in the CD tray, but then ejects it saying "found CD does not match selected size". Is there a special template in glabels that I should use?

Revision history for this message
gerold (gerold-wagner-arcor) said :

I'm now using hplip 2.8.12, and I've managed to print on CDs.
There are stille some problems:

* Gtk applications like Gimp or glabels ignore the page size, which is set to CD/DVD. It's impossible to select the page size from within the app, the button is faded out. It shows an A4 page in the preview and says "CD does not match selected size" when I try to print , or does not print at all.

* KDE applications like Gwenview leave a white 7mm margin at the top border of the CD (closer to the printer's front).

* The CUPS test page seems to be in the correct position, the scale at the border of the test page is visible right at the top, bottom, left and right border of the CD.

Printing to CD/DVD on these printers is supported only for Best or 1200 dpi modes. In Cups printer options page, select 600 dpi or 1200 dpi modes from the Resolution, Quality, Ink Type, Media Type box.
We have verified that it works in these modes.
Thanks for your patience.

Negative. Doesn't work on the C5580. Tried selecting 600 dpi modes from within glabels, from the HPLIP systray, and from CUPS. All have the same negative results. Printer tells me to close the tray to resume print, then prints on the lower tray paper. Also went to the systray and selected CD/DVD media size and source, and 600 dpi quality. Negative results...

Raghu,

Have you made any progress on this issue? I've been experimenting with all kinds of different settings and printing from different applications and it makes no difference what I do. 3.9.2 just won't print to the CD/DVD tray for me, even though all my settings are telling it to send the job to the tray.

I cleared out 3.9.2 and installed 2.8.12. Now I am able to print on CDs.

However, I see what gerold explained a few messages back. gLabels still does not directly allow printing to the disc, you have to export it to a PDF and then print the PDF to the disc. I think this might be because there is no properly sized CD template for gLabels from HPLIP. I noticed that the reason it works as a PDF is because you have to tell the PDF viewer the page size, i.e. File - Print Setup - Photosmart.. - DVD 120 mm.

Conclusions: 3.9.2 has a regression in regards to CD tray selection. And somewhere between 2.8.8 and 2.8.10 a regression occurred which causes apps like gLabels to either ignore or become very picky about the page size. I can only confirm that version 2.8.7 didn't have this behavior.

I would still like to help HPLIP fix 3.9.2 since I don't think myself and others will want to be stuck with 2.8.12 forever.

Raghu,

After installing 2.8.12 and using it on a regular basis, I came to find out that I was no longer able to print to the photo tray! What is going on here! I have now gone back to the default 2.8.7 from the Intrepid repository.

2.8.7 from Intrepid repo: Everything working. CD/DVD tray working directly from glabels.
2.8.12: Photo tray not working at all, CD/DVD tray working but not directly from glabels.
3.9.2: Photo tray working, CD/DVD not working at all.

WTF?!?! What could be wrong with my system?

Each time I installed a different version I would use Synaptic to purge the 2.8.7 version, and I followed the HPLIP procedure to uninstall the 2.8.12 and 3.9.2 versions. Am I having some missing dependancy issue? Clearly there is something missing when I install from the HPLIP tarball.

It will be interesting to see what happens when I upgrade this box to Jaunty, which has the 3.9.2 version in its repos.

After I have managed to find the right printer driver for this printer, I can select paper size CD/DVD 120mm and input tray CD/DVD, but it will not print CD's or DVD's. I have to close the tray and the test page appears nice formatted for a 120mm CD/DVD on A4 paper.

This printer is not labeled right in the PPD-file /usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs/hplip/hp-photosmart_c5300_series-hpijs.ppd. There it is labeled as "HP PS c5300 Series hpijs, hpijs 3.9.2.49" while YaST is searching for "HP Photosmart C5300 series". Would be nice to change the nick name in the PPD file, so that the driver (PPD file) can be found automatically.

I have a C5550 and I have been testing Jaunty for some timke. Last week I installed the release candidate and it comes with HPLIP 3.9.2. I have had the identical problem right along. I have been following this thread also. I set up a separate printer with the CD/DVD defined sizes and other options and I get a message to raise the CD/DVD tray before printing. It works ok under Vista but it is a pain for me to go to Vista whenever I want to print a CD/DVD. I have temporarily gone back to the "magic marker method". ugh.

Why isn't HPLIP addressing these regressions? When I upgrade to Jaunty I'm going to have to downgrade HPLIP to 2.8.7.

I have the same problem here with a C5380 on Jaunty - can't print on CDs. I tried upgrading to HPLIP 3.9.4b without any improvement. I also tried to downgrade to HPLIP 2.8.7 using the automatic installer, but got an error about CUPSEXT could not be loaded and I tried to manually install 2.8.7 from the tarball and this failed due to the wrong version of Python.

So, no CD label printing on the C5380 in Jaunty.

Some further information:

When I successfully print a label from Intrepid (HPLIP 2.8.7) I get the following from /var/log/cups/error.log:

D [24/May/2009:12:29:49 +1000] [Job 39] Starting renderer with command: gs -dFirstPage=1 -q -dBATCH -dPARANOIDSAFER -dQUIET -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=ijs -sIjsServer=hpijs -dDEVICEWIDTHPOINTS=354 -dDEVICEHEIGHTPOINTS=354 -sDeviceManufacturer="HEWLETT-PACKARD" -sDeviceModel="deskjet 5600" -dDuplex=false -r600 -sIjsParams=Quality:Quality=0,Quality:ColorMode=2,Quality:MediaType=0,Quality:PenSet=2,PS:MediaPosition=14 -dIjsUseOutputFD -sOutputFile=- /var/spool/cups/tmp/foomatic-S5wrqY

When I try to print from Jaunty (HPLIP 3.9.2), I get:

D [24/May/2009:12:37:16 +1000] [Job 19] Starting renderer with command: gs -dFirstPage=1 -q -dBATCH -dPARANOIDSAFER -dQUIET -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=ijs -sIjsServer=hpijs -dDEVICEWIDTHPOINTS=354 -dDEVICEHEIGHTPOINTS=354 -sDeviceManufacturer="HEWLETT-PACKARD" -sDeviceModel="deskjet 5600" -dDuplex=false -r600 -sIjsParams=Quality:Quality=0,Quality:ColorMode=2,Quality:MediaType=0,Quality:PenSet=2,PS:MediaPosition=14 -dIjsUseOutputFD -sOutputFile=- /var/spool/cups/tmp/foomatic-U5oscn

These are essentially identical and they both contain "PS:MediaPosition=14". There is nothing here that explains why one works and not the other.

Raghu, I don't understand how you are able to print labels. Can you confirm that your printer type, OS version and HPLIP version?

I still haven't upgraded this box to Jaunty since this issue is not yet fixed. Perhaps there is something else coming into play here? What other libs are involved with printing? There's HPLIP, then CUPS, is there anything else? Something other layer in Gnome? The way communication over USB occurs? I'm just trying to put some ideas out there. Obvioulsy if Raghu and other HPLIP devs are not having this problem then there must be something else involved.

Mal Gamble,

I think you can install an older version of Python then specify the location of it when you configure 2.8.7. Something like ./configure --python=/blah/blah/.... Check the output of ./configure --help

MMarking - thanks for the suggestion about Python.

Actually I did some more experimenting and discovered that the 2.8.7 printer drivers are actually working on Jaunty - it's just the HP tools, like hp-check and hp-toolbox that are failing due to dependency problems.

So the work-around of installing HPLIP 2.8.7 in Jaunty does allow labels to be printed on my C5380, but until I figure out how to fix the dependencies, I won't be able to check the printer status, including ink levels, etc.

The GUI tools need some Qt dependancies I think. Again, I think it should be possible to install an older version of the Qt dev files then specify which version to use when configuring.

I, too, am experiencing this problem.

OS is Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty). Behavior is identical with Jaunty's version of HPLIP (3.9.2) and with the version I downloaded from HP (3.9.4).

Printer is Photosmart D5460.

Like many others, I bought this printer exclusively for use under Linux, with the understanding that it was fully-supported. Printing directly to the disc surface was the feature that lead me to choose this particular printer. Very disappointed and annoyed.

I don't think HPLIP is paying attention to this thread anymore. I filed a bug report a while back and it was "triaged". There are one or two other similar bug reports since then from other people but they have not been responded to. We need someone involved that understands how printing works in Linux. Clearly there is something interferring between the lp command and the hardware. In all of the debug logs from everyone that is affected by this the CD/DVD tray is always shown as being selected, but something is mis-communicating that to the hardware.

Please folks, this is most like;y a simple fix within your code. Can't you fix it for us? I could have purchased any other printer without the CD printing function but I really wanted to be able to do this. I have to use Windows for this now, or write on the cd/dvd with a black marker. Neither are satisfactory solutions.

François-Xavier ÉON,

Maybe you need the correct template for printing on CDs with glabels. The template I am using is stored in ~/.glabels/HP_C5380.template and contains the following (I found this somewhere in Ubuntu Forums):

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<Glabels-templates xmlns="http://snaught.com/glabels/2.2/">
  <Template brand="HP" part="C5380" size="Other" width="4.92126in" height="4.92126in" description="CD Labels">

    <Label-cd id="0" radius="2.3125in" hole="0.8125in" waste="0.125in">

      <Layout nx="1" ny="1" x0="0.125in" y0="0.125in" dx="4.875in" dy="4.875in"/>

It seems that this bug (#334829) is assigned to Aaron Albright and it is shown as "triaged", but is well down the list of priorities. As always, the work backlog exceeds the available resources.

I would be happy to help with this, but my knowledge of HPLIP and CUPS is severely limited. I would be interested in any suggestions about other troubleshooting steps that could be tried.

At this stage, I have HPLIP 2.8.7 running on 9.04 without the python tools. This is not really a major problem as the printer can be configured using the Gnome printing configuration tool or CUPs and I can check the ink levels on the printer interface screen.

With HPLIP 3.9.2 installed and untouched, I did a little experiment by going into CUPS directly and adding another printer at the same URI address, but setup using the PPD file from HPLIP 2.8.7. Unfortunately this had no effect. CUPS error log in debug mode continues to show the correct MediaPosition being selected, so clearly this issue is deeper than just the PPD file.

I just want to confirm the same problem on a fedora 11 preview system (which also appears to have
hplip 3.9.2). I have a small Qt app I wrote to get complicated apps like gimp out of the equation. On
fedora 10, I can use it to print a DVD with no problem (fedora 10 has hplip 2.8.12). On fedora 11,
the printer insists that I should remove the DVD try, then it prints the image on the letter size
paper from the default tray.

I just did some more experiments on fedora 11 and possibly have some relevant information:

The native fedora 11 packages involved in these experiments are:

hpijs 3.9.2-4.fc11 and hplip 3.9.2-4.fc11 (I'm on x86_64 architecture).

The native packages for fedora 10 are:

hpijs 2.8.12-6.fc10 and hplip 2.8.12-6.fc10

On my fedora 11 box, I still see the problem above I had with fedora 11 preview, it prints on
letter rather than DVD.

I beat rpm over the head and forced it to remove the f11 hplip and install the f10 hplip
(no other packages were altered). With just the f10 hplip, the behavior was identical to
f11 - printing on paper, not DVD.

I then forced it to remove the f11 hpijs and install the f10 hpijs, and Ta-Da! I could then
print to DVD media the same way I could on fedora 10.

So it appears the specific problem is in the hpijs package, not hplip (of course, I don't know
if that distinction is merely an artefact of fedora packaging or not).

OK, Here's the transcript of my latest experiment. I did a "yum update" to get back the default 3.9.2
fedora 11 versions of hplip and hpijs, then I tries just changing hpijs, leaving hplip as the 3.9.2 version like
so:

[root@zooty downloads]# ls -l hpijs*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3009608 Mar 13 09:01 hpijs-2.8.12-6.fc10.x86_64.rpm
[root@zooty downloads]# rpm -q hpijs
hpijs-3.9.2-4.fc11.x86_64
[root@zooty downloads]# rpm -e --nodeps hpijs-3.9.2-4.fc11.x86_64
[root@zooty downloads]# rpm -ihv --nodeps --force hpijs-2.8.12-6.fc10.x86_64.rpm
warning: hpijs-2.8.12-6.fc10.x86_64.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 4ebfc273
Preparing... ########################################### [100%]
   1:hpijs ########################################### [100%]
[root@zooty downloads]# service cups restart
Stopping cups: [ OK ]
Starting cups: [ OK ]

I previously downloaded the f10 2.8.12 version while booted into f10 by doing

yumdownloader hpijs.x86_64

Anyway, it turns out I can, in fact, print on a DVD with hpijs-2.8.12 installed on fedora 11, the hplip
version is still the new fedora 11 one:

[root@zooty downloads]# rpm -q hplip
hplip-3.9.2-4.fc11.x86_64
[root@zooty downloads]# rpm -q hpijs
hpijs-2.8.12-6.fc10.x86_64

So I guess if I were really ambitious I'd download the old and new source rpms and start comparing
them (but I don't know if I'm that ambitious or not :-).

Since the redhat bugzilla has pointers to this item, I ought to provide a pointer back to the
redhat bugzilla here. See:

Well, I did find a (possibly) inserted call to a new routine in the source code for dj9xxvip.cpp (depending
on what ifdefs this is built with). The 3.9.2 code adds a call to:

SetMediaType (MediaTypeToPcl (eMediaType));

near the beginning of HeaderDJ990::Send().

That call comes right after an if statement checking for MEDIA_CDDVD
which calls SetMediaSource a couple of times.

I wonder if the SetMediaType call should be in an else for the "not MEDIA_CDDVD" case?

The bug above seems to hypothesize the driver is generating conflicting
tray and media commands.

I've hesitated to tackle that because I'd have to figure out how to get it all built and installed then try to
put the shambles back the way they were if it didn't work so I could continue to simply get fedora
cups updates.

I wonder if the new hpcups is similar enough to hpijs that I could just build 3.9.6, but not install it,
then just substitute the hpcups binary driver for the hpijs one on the system to see if it
works that way.

Revision history for this message
Tom Horsley (tom-horsley) said :

In answer to my own question, nope the filters aren't similar enough the hpcups can replace hpijs :-).

However, in another experiment, I found that just substituting the /usr/bin/hpijs from fedora 10
(the 2.8.12 version) for /usr/bin/hpijs in fedora 11 does allow dvd printing to work, so I don't even need
the whole hpijs rpm install, I only need the driver executable.

I'm off to see if I can figure out how to install just the hpcups backend from 3.9.6 so as not to collide
with any of my existing fedora rpms.

Revision history for this message
Tom Horsley (tom-horsley) said :

Well, I couldn't figure out how to install enough of the hpcups stuff to make anything work, but I was
highly depressed by the fact that the .ppd file in hpcups for the photosmart series c5500 doesn't
mention the CD/DVD tray as an InputSource, so even if I could have gotten it installed, I don't think
that is a good sign for the quality of the spiffy new hpcups backend :-(.

I did try building and using the 3.6.9 version of the hpijs program, and it behaves excatly like all the
other broken ones (which didn't surprise me since I assume all the effort is now going into hpcups).

What possible negative effect(s) happen by replacing the hpijs binary with a different version from the HPLIP driver? The bug reporter (https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/380858) also reported this hack to work.
