installing a new office jet 6978. Comp won't recognize scanner

I just installed a new HP Office Jet 6978 AIO printer. I run Linux Mint on my computer and it doesn't recognize the scanner. I try to scan, and the printer screen says, "not connected to printer", however, I can print directly from my computer.
