unable to install hplip from non-root, then cannot communicate with device

Asked by igors

Hello,
I have just installed lenny. Then I tried to install newer hplip, but when the installation script asked for root password it "waited over 300 seconds with no replay" and the password seemed incorrect for the script, though it wasn't. Then I installed hplip from root console, somehow I even managed to print hplip test page. The problems have begun when I tried to run xsane - no appropriate devices were detected. Running hp-check -t amused me: no printer queues found, however, - no errors or warnings returned. And the cups toolbox shows the queue, and operates normally - I can print, but I cannot scan (xsane does not detect), and hplip toolbox shows communication error 5012. Nevertheless, /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp detects the printer (hp deskjet f2280 all-in-one) normally, but I cannot open device in hplip toolbox.
So I uninstalled new version and installed older, which came along with lenny.
Here is the output of hp-check -t :
esmu-dators:/home/igors# /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp
direct hp:/usb/Deskjet_F2200_series?serial=CN87F4R0RQ0534 "HP Deskjet F2200 series" "HP Deskjet F2200 series USB CN87F4R0RQ0534 HPLIP" "MFG:HP;MDL:Deskjet F2200 series;CLS:PRINTER;DES:Deskjet F2200 series;SN:CN87F4R0RQ0534;"
esmu-dators:/home/igors# hp-check -t

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

It doesn't look like you have any printer queues configured for using the hp:// backend.

Please run

su -c "hp-setup"

to configure the printer.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, It has only added one another printer to cups, and I still can scan nothing. And still device comm. error 5012 at HPLIP toolbox.

Lets look at the system logs and see if we can get a hint on the problem. Run:

su -c "tail -f /var/log/syslog"

Then run xsane in another terminal shell and post the output from the syslog.

Thanks.

Actually, could this be the right reason for hp asking for to do not install hplip as root?
