required plugin
For my new CM1312nfi MFP, there is a subheading "Install Required Plugin"
2 questions:
1. what is the "required plugin"
2. I have clicked and received the message that the plugin was successfully installed. However, the same subheading is always present. Does the plugin need to be re-installed for every invocation? if not, then could the subheading be shaded to indicate that it is not active, that the plugin has been installed?
Great software.

Looks like you should be good to go.
The plugin is required for the HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP--once the plugin is downloaded you shouldn't need to (or be asked) to download it again. You don't need to install the plugin again once it's installed. However if the printer requires firmware it will automatically be loaded if/when the printer is powercycled.
Are you having a specific problem?
Thanks.

No problem - it's just confusing that HPLIP has the "Install Required plug-in" action always active.
It raises the question: Do I need to install again or maybe the install didn't "take" or maybe the plug-in is changing almost daily.
If the "Install Required Plug-in" action was grayed out or otherwise indicated that the plug-in is installed and that further action is not needed, it would help a lot in this regard.
You state: "you shouldn't need to (or be asked) to download it again" - the fact that the action is there and "active" is always asking for the plug-in to be installed.

David,
I'm sorry I'm not exactly clear on what you are asking or looking for. If you run hp-plugin it will download and install the plugin. Although once the plugin is installed you shouldn't need to run hp-plugin again.
What is the exact problem you are having? For example, you reboot the computer and the printer doesn't work and you have to run hp-plugin again for it to work? If the printer is printing and working I'm not sure what you are asking.
Thanks.

I'll try to be as clear as I can.
When I boot the HP Device Manager, the Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP printer panel under the "Actions" tab shows a heading titled "Install Required Plug-in".
Now that heading is active. By that I mean it is not "grayed out" or shown in a lighter shade than the other headings nor does it indicate in any manner that the required plug-in has been installed.
I have clicked on that action before, a box appeared with 2 bullets. The first bullet is to download and install the plug-in. I click "next" and a box appeared that the action is being taken and then a box appeared that the plug-in was successfully installed.
So I assumed that was the end of it.
The next time I boot the device manager, the "Install Required Plug-in" action is still there under the action tab and does NOT indicate in any manner whatsoever that the previous install of the required plug-in is still installed and active.
In fact, the "Install Required Plug-in" action seems to indicate one or both of two things:
1. that the required plug-in needs to be installed again, and/or
2. the required plug-in has been updated and the updated required plug-in needs to be installed.
So I click on the "Install Required Plug-in" again and repeat the above process and get a message of a successful install.
This process repeats EVERY TIME I boot the device manager.
Now if the required plug-in is installed and remains installed, then the "Install Required Plug-in" action should indicate this fact.
What it currently indicates is that the Required Plug-in should be installed again, and again, and again, .....
So the questions is: IF the required plug-in does NOT need to be re-installed, why doesn't the action title indicate this???
It currently indicates that the required plug-in DOES need to be re-installed.
Sorry that is about as clear as I can get.

Ah okay I see what you are saying now. We can reproduce this and this will be fixed in a future release of HPLIP.
Thanks for the feedback.

Hi I am having the same issue as David (fastsnip-bcard) on hplip-3.11.12 I installed the plugin using hplugin -i and it installed AOK. On the HP Device Manager it still says "Install Required Plugin". I can print and scan although Test Print does not work.

Hi
Thanks for the log. We tried to reproduce the same in our lab but couldn't reproduce it. The plug-in file got installed fine.
Can you try one more method of installing the plug-in file ?
- Download the plug-in file manually using the command :
wget - -no-cache "http://
- Download the plug-in digital signature file.
wget - -no-cache "http://
- To install the plug-in run command :
sudo sh hplip-3.
provide us the out put of this command if you get the same segmentation error.
sudo sh hplip-3.
Regards,
Goutam

Hi,
I tried to reproduce the same in our lab with the same set-up of Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit but could not get the segmentation fault.
May be in your system it is accessing a different version of Python library files. To confirm that please help us provide us some more debug outputs.
1. Run command :
sudo sh hplip-3.
It will ask, About to extract XXXX KB in /tmp/selfgzXXXX
Press Y and proceed.
As sudo user go to the folder /tmp/selfgzXXXX
sudo cd /tmp/selfgz*
Next , run command
python ./plugin_install.py -g
And provide its output here.
Sorry for asking you more on this.
Regards,
Goutam

That is not working. No file /tmp/selfgz26945 is getting created as the script executes the installation. See following:

I need you to only uncompress the hplip-3.
Execute the file by command python ./plugin_install.py $* -g and please provide its output here.
