I just updated hplip and got this:

Asked by juntjoo

DeskJet_3630 ------------ Type: Printer Device URI: hp:/net/DeskJet_3630_series?ip=10.0.0.4 PPD: /etc/cups/ppd/DeskJet_3630.ppd warning: Failed to read /etc/cups/ppd/DeskJet_3630.ppd ppd file PPD Description: Print

and every time I try to reinstall the drivers, at the end it says I can disconnect the usb cable then run: hp-setup, which send me back to the beginning of the setup process. and I went in a circle a couple times to be honest. not fun lol. anyway, where should I go now?

I tried reinstalling for a wired connection and got this:

Searching... (bus=usb, search=(None), desc=0)error: No PPD found for model deskjet_3630 using old algorithm.
error: No appropriate print PPD file found for model deskjet_3630_series

Maybe a file access rights problem.

What is the output of

ls -l /etc/cups/ppd/
groups

you have to grant membership in the lp group to that user.

thanks. never had this problem before. what is "lp"? and how do you think this happened?

Manfred Hampl (m-hampl) said :

lp is an acronym for line-printer.
I have no idea why you have this problem now, if it was not there bevor the upgrade.

so it worked, adding myself to the lp group, then tried the wireless setup and got this:

Searching for device...
Found device: hp:/net/DeskJet_3630_series?ip=192.168.0.192
error: No PPD found for model deskjet_3630 using old algorithm.
error: No appropriate print PPD file found for model deskjet_3630_series

then put in your earlier suggested command:

ben@Hal:~$ ls -l /etc/cups/ppd/
total 0
ben@Hal:~$ groups
ben adm lp cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin sambashare

looks chinese to me. any ideas?

Sorry, but this is something that I now do not understand.

In your original question the IP address of the printer was shown as 10.0.0.4, but now it apparently is192.168.0.192?

In your comment #2 there was a ppd file for that printer available (although not readable because of access restrictions), and now that ppd file has disappeared?

What actions related to printer setup have you done since April 19?

How do you think I feel?? um, originally I still had that 10.0.0.4 one still installed from before when I was using a different router/modem and just recently deleted. I hadn't before because the installation thing asked me if I was sure I wanted to write over it, 'it's already there' or something so I said no, Idk why. Idk why going from one router to another has to be so difficult. you'd think there would be a button that says "push here if you need to update your router" but no, so I just do what I remember doing instaling this thing in the first place. Idk what I'm doing, that's why I'm here. so the 192 one is the correct one.

so yeah, I guess that ppd file disappeared. idk. could you suggest how I find it? should it be different if I'm using a different router?

Manfred Hampl (m-hampl) said :

I suggest that you try reinstalling hplip. This should provide the ppd file again.

Ok, the basic software seems to be correctly installed.

What output do you get for the command

ls -l /etc/cups/ppd/*363*

I assume you mean by entering the "device URI" which I don't know or how to obtain. I remember seeing it before in settings. Any tips on this part?

How is the printer connected and configured?

it isn't connected unless I need to install it for the first time then I do it via USB. "Configured"? IDK I've done anything to configure it. I just have connected it right out of the box.

I use it wirelessly, connected via my router, if that helps.

How do you connect it to your router?
Which IP address settings did you define for it (that is what I meant with configuration)?

I connect it wirelessly to the router. And I didn't define any IP address. I just let it do that on it's own. Thanks

And what IP address gas the printer now got?'

Revision history for this message
juntjoo (juntjoo) said :
#25

Well it doesn't have anything now as there is no printer installed. I guess either I deleted it or it got deleted somehow but trying to reinstall it just now I'm not having any success. The process finishes right after connecting to the router and afterwards it says basically 'you're all set, go ahead and unplug the usb cable and run "hp-setup"' but usually "hp-setup" is followed by the IP address, but not this time, and when I just type hp-setup it brings me back to square one. And if I put in 192.168.0.192 which is what it was before with this router it fails to find it. And I happen to notice the WIFI printer light is blinking which I believe means it's not connected to any router, but during the setup process the last step is connecting to the router, where I put in the password and it connects, and the applet didn't say anything negative about that step, just moves on to the last screen saying 'all is good, unplug usb bla bla'. So I'll look into the wireless light blinking. Not sure what the problem could be. I'm sure of the password and the network is good as I'm on the internet with this PC and my phone through it.

Revision history for this message
juntjoo (juntjoo) said :

okay, I was able to resolve whatever the WIFI issue was under Windows(my laptop has Windows too) and got a step further under Ubuntu, back to where it says there is no PPD file. So that's where we are now, back to where we were in the middle of this thread. The IP has been reset to 192.168.0.191. Don't know why there is no PPD file installed.

so I went into synaptic package manager and searched for "PPD" and checked all files that had I guess a green box next to them that were'nt already installed and installed them. Didn't quite know what I was doing but I believe I did it before(but forgot cuz I then also didn't quite know what I was doing) and it worked. No more missing PPD files. Installed printer wireless. All set. Thanks Manfred for sticking around
