HP LaserJet Pro M12w Driver

Asked by Bernard Peek

The LaserJet Pro M12w is not listed as a supported type. Is there another driver that I could try? If not is there an ETA for support in HPLIP?

This page (https://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/kein-treiber-fuer-hp-laserjet-pro-m12w/) mentions that the driver for the Laserjet Pro CP1025nw should work for printing. There is currently no way to setup WiFi with HPLIP, and I guess that's the reason why it is not officially supported.

Thanks Andreas but that did not work. When sending a test page I get a message saying "rendering complete" so I assume that data was sent to the printer. When I open the print queue I see a message "filter failed."

That's bad. Sorry I can't help you further. I came across this page because I was thinking about buying a M12W, but I don't yet have one. Since it obviously isn't that easy, I think I'll rather not buy it.

I am waiting for that driver couple of months. They said it will be in next version, but last version was in november. Is this project still alive?

Can anyone confirm that this driver will be in next version?

There has been another release of HPLIP since I filed the bug report. I have posted a similar report on HP's forums but have not seen any response. Do other printer manufacturers have these issues? It's not too late for me to return the printer as "not fit for purpose."

There has been a new Windows driver released and the printer is now included in the scheme that HP use to email users about driver updates. I am not sure whether an update to HPLIP will be included in the emails.

Hi,

The support for this printer will be definitely available in the next release. Keep checking HPLIP site for the updates.

Regards,
Ajay

Hi, is there any estimation, when the next HPLIP release (containing the driver for HP LaserJet Pro M12w) will be available?

Meanwhile, I thought this project is dead. The website http://hplipopensource.com/ was down, the news section http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/news.html is still not working, and there are no dates visible in the release notes to get an idea how much time went by between releases...
I would love to get any insights, but wasn't even able to find a public mailinglist, a bug tracker, some sort of timeline or milestone lists or whatever.

You may want to take a look at the changelog of the debian package at http://metadata.ftp-master.debian.org/changelogs/main/h/hplip/hplip_3.17.6+repack0-2_changelog

Everywhere it reads "New upstream version", a new HPLIP version was released. So 3.17.6 is from June 2017, 3.17.4 is from April 2014 and 3.16.11 is from December 2016.

So the project is not dead, but the company has some very different standards compared to that of the Open Source community. That is also the case with other large companys and their OpenSource projects (e.g. Oracle).

I'm also patiently waiting for hplip to start supporting the M12w. Will there come an open driver, that doesn't require a proprietary plugin? When I got this printer I thought support for it (through hplip) would appear rather fast, considering the simple nature of the M12w.
