HP Photosmart C5180 with new "device communication error" 5012

After installing Virtual Box (it may be pure coincidence) my Intrepid system can't communicate with my C5180 all in one any more. "Device communication error" 5012 no matter what I do. It was working fine before that as far as I could tell. XSane gives me an "error during device I/O" but oddly enough I can access an SD card inserted into the built-in card reader on the front of the printer.

I'm not an experienced Ubuntu user yet, but trying to get there! My sincerest thanks for any assistance you can offer.
