HPLIP

Have hplip 2.8.7 installed, ran hp-setup, still can't print dvi or pdf

I have hp laserjet p1006 connected via usb. I ran hpsetup from a terminal and went through the option to connect via usb. It detected the device and finished. But I still can't print my pdf or dvi files. The print que comes up, shows the job finished, but no output from the printer.
