how to use broken filter

I get a message that i have a broken package and to use the broken filter to locate it
How do i find and use the broken filter and and what do with the broken package when i locate it?

Have had the same problem when dealing with 294 updates on first installing Ubuntu 8.4.1 So where exactly can I find the "broken filter"? I take it that it is some sort of cunning software for filtering out those downloads that are corrupt and therefore unusable.
