ubuntu 8.10 HP Deskjet 500c not detected

Asked by Edward Vopata

Problem:

Linux: Ubuntu 8.10
Printer: HP Deskjet 500C

Printer will not print a test page. The busy led blinks, but it never prints.

Pressing the printer's "Reset" button will cause the printer to misprint. Prints without
advancing the paper.

The process "parallel:/dev/lp0" seems to hang.

I have manually added the printer with System->Admin->Printing

hp-setup does not detect the printer.

--------------
The printer works correctly under Windows.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are
installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper
dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

The printer is not configured to use the hp:// backend. Please run:

sudo hp-setup

to configure the printer.

Oh sorry I missed that.

Everything looks okay. What is your parallel port set to in your BIOS?

Are you using windows on this same box or a different system?

The printer worked on this system before I upgrade from RedHat 9 to Ubuntu 8.10.

Okay. That looks okay as well.

Try running:

sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog

then disconnect and reconnect the parallel, anything in the syslog?

Nothing showed up in /var/log/syslog while I disconnected and then reconnect the parallel cable.

Nothing showed up in /var/log/syslog when I power cycled the printer.

I did find some stuff in /var/log/kern.log

I tried to send raw text to the printer by
  % echo -e "Test 1 2 3 4\r\f" > /dev/lp0

This produced the expected output. A page with the text "Test 1 2 3 4" ejected from the printer.

This seems to indicate that the hardware (printer, cable, and parallel port) is connected properly and is functional.

Edward,

We've recently changed our support "level" for some products in a few ways. You can get more information about this device's support by HPLIP here:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/deskjet/deskjet_500c.html

This product is considered supported by HPLIP (it should work with HPLIP) but we are no longer testing or providing technical troubleshooting support for the device.

You can get more information on the "support levels" here:

http://hplipopensource.com/node/314

We've had to do this to be able to move forward and support newer devices with our limited resources and because HP has a limit on how long devices are supported with technical assistance by HP. We are now in line with the regular HP support on how long devices are supported and how much support is provided.

I hope this makes sense and if you are still having a problem perhaps community member can join in and help.

We do appreciate your support of the HPLIP project and I apologize for any inconvenience.

Aaron

Can you help with this problem?
