HP ColorLaserJet 3600 failing on openSUSE 11.1 (hplip 2.8.7)

Asked by Victor

When trying to setup a network HP Color LaserJet 3600 on port 9100 via TCP, sometimes Yast recognizes it and some times it doesn't. Furthermore, when it recognizes the printer, I'm able to set it up and print some stuff like the test page and simple graphics, but when I attempt to print some complex graphics, like *.svg (inkscape) files, the printer shows a "PCL XL error" and got unavailable for my computer (everybody else on the network could use it without problems, being windows users). When it happens, I uninstall it and try to reinstall, but the Yast connection wizard doesn't find it via the TCP address, showing the following detailed error message when testing connection:

-------------------------------
PING 192.168.2.134 (192.168.2.134) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.2.134: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.063 ms

rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.063/0.063/0.063/0.000 ms

No connection possible to port 9100
--------------------------------

If I attempt to install it via # su - -c "hp-setup" command on the shell, it doesn't find the printer even manually.

I could use any other HP printer installed in the same network via the TCP protocol without problems. For the 3600 printer, I should wait more than 24 hours after failure and suddenly, without doing nothing special, it starts working again, but just for simple printing (of course I have to configure it again).

I am not sure if I must install the last version of hplip (2.8.12) and if it will solve the problem. ¿Any idea, I really need to use this printer?

Please run hp-check -t and post the output.

Also run

hp-makeuri ip.address.of.printer

and post that output as well.

Thanks!

It looks like there are two versions of your printer.. are you using the 3600 or the 3600n? If you are using the 3600 how are you connecting the printer to the network?

It seems that there is either a problem with the network and/or a problem with your snmp on your system.

It is a 3600dn. An hour ago I did the following:

1.- I uninstalled every printer on my system using Yast.
2.- I opened the hplip software that comes with openSUSE 11.1 and successfully installed there all the other printers except 3600.
3.- I used CUPS to configure default settings for every installed printer, because hplip failed to do it.
4.- I tried again the 3600 installation using hplip; the software asked for the installation of a special driver and an additional plug-in, it downloaded and installed them automatically.
5.- I used CUPS again to configure default settings for this printer.
6.- Send a test page to the printer and voalá, it is working now.

I am waiting to see if the printer doesn't fail again, because I successfully installed it with Yast twice before and suddenly it stopped working, and again, suddenly worked again without doing nothing special. If you have an idea of what else may I check in advance, I'll appreciate it.

I checked finally the printers with Yast and all of them are being recognized by it.

Thank you very much

When a piece of hardware worked, then "suddenly it stopped working,
and again, suddenly worked again without doing nothing special",
it is more than likely a hardware-related issue which does not mean
that the hardware itself must be broken but something "near" the
hardware does not work reliably.
For example the USB system (USB hardware + USB kernel stuff)
is known to be somewhat unstable under certain conditions.

In particular because the settings in the sprinting system
and the software of the printing system does not change
randomly the reason is more than likely in a lower level.

In your particular case (network printer) the reason could be also
in your network (sometimes the network connection works,
sometimes not) e.g. because of unstable network hardware
(like cheap and weak network router boxes or unstable wlan stuff)
or because of unstable network settings (like changing IP addresses
for your printer via a too simple setup DHCP server or whatever).

The YaST error message "No connection possible to port 9100"
indicates where to look first of all for the cause of the issue:
Check your network stuff and make sure that the connection
to the printer via network works stable and reliably (in particular
do not use changing IP addresses via DHCP but assign a fixed one).

On the other hand because it works for you for "any other HP printer
installed in the same network via the TCP protocol without problems"
it indicates that the root cause of the problem might be really inside
the 3600dn. Perhaps its built-in network interface is just such a
piece of cheap and weak hardware but whether this is true knows
only the manufacturer of this piece of hardware ;-)

Can you help with this problem?
