HP 4650 usb on Ubuntu 8.10 x64 Printer may not be connected

Asked by maddawg75

This is currently the only issue I'm having and is what is keeping my workgroup from making the switch to Ubuntu. We are working on a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10 amd64. We have several HP 4650 printers and a 4300 B&W. Getting the same issue with ALL HP LaserJet printers connected via USB. I also have a local OfficeJet K550 that prints just fine through USB,

So, here is the information currently on the 4650:

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Run hp-toolbox, delete the currently printer queue and run sudo hp-setup to configure the printer.

If you still have a problem run:

sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog

then try and print and post the output.

Thanks!

Aaron

Well. I am wondering if it is Debian/Ubuntu issue. I just ran the Fedora 10 Live disc and it printed with no issues. Tried the Ubuntu 8.10 Live disc as well just to see if it was possibly an issue with an update that was run. no joy there either.

Thanks for the help so far, but perhaps we'll switch to Fedora 10 and run that as opposed to Ubuntu. I guess that solves the immediate problem for now. I am going to keep this open as I will keep Ubuntu on this machine and attempt to get the printer issue fixed. Perhaps someone will glean some information from it and it will help them.

Thanks again.
