Unable to download the latest HPLIP version (2.8.9).

Asked by Andreas

Unable to download the latest HPLIP. I am installing HP Laserjet printer M1319f MFP on laptop, running Ubuntu 8.04 off an 8GB mem stick. My Synaptic manager will only detect HPLIP v. 2.8.2, but I need minimum v. 2.8.5 for this printer, according to the HPLIP literature. Latest HPLIP version is 2.8.9

Thank you, Aaron. I tried your advice. When I tried to download HPLIP 2.8.10, I got this message on the terminal:

andreas@andreas-laptop:~$ sh hplip-2.8.10.run
sh: Can't open hplip-2.8.10.run
andreas@andreas-laptop:~$

I tried command hp-check -b, as requested by the hplip site, and got the following message, which does not mean much to me, as I am a beginner in Ubuntu. :

andreas@andreas-laptop:~$ hp-check -b

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Right now I am running ubuntu 8.04 on an 8GB memory stick. Because of the errors mentioned in the above message, I will now download the new ubuntu 8.10 and try to install it on my main hard drive, hoping to improve the response, then try again to connect the printer. Any comments will be appreciated. AM.
