hpsc3100 doesn't print (testpage), but seems to bee installed ok

Asked by notedopjes

I am running Gentoo and have cups running, installed hplip, configured as described in the gentoo printing quide (hp-setup).
My printer is visible in cups, but when i send any job to the printer it doesn't get printed (ppd, text). hp-testpage doesn't work either.

The jobs are visable in the the job list but keep stuck at status processing.

scanning with x-sane as root does work, but not as regular user.

when i look in the cups log i see:
D [18/Oct/2008:14:06:02 +0200] [Job 16] prnt/backend/hp.c 675: INFO: open device failed; will retry in 30 seconds...

i think this is the problem. What is going on here (scanner does work)? Please help!!

cups log (debug mode) while printing a testpage:

Other users have reported problems using HPLIP on Gentoo. Because of the large number of variations when installing Gentoo we don't test on this platform. You can do a search such as:

https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+questions?field.search_text=gentoo&field.sort=RELEVANCY&field.sort-empty-marker=1&field.actions.search=Search&field.language=en&field.language-empty-marker=1&field.status=OPEN&field.status=NEEDSINFO&field.status=ANSWERED&field.status=SOLVED&field.status=EXPIRED&field.status=INVALID&field.status-empty-marker=1

for some more information. At this time the information available from the other tickets is all I can provide.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

As a side note if you are able to get HPLIP installed and working I'd love to have a conversation with you and get the specific details so that I can put together a how to for other users.

Thanks for your support of HPLIP.

I got a partial working solution.

Wrong:
using the hp-setup tool to configure the printer, eg set up cups. The printer uses wrong URI (device). Scanning, ink-level etc works this way but printing doesn't

Right:
Use cups to detect and install the printer. When doing this the URI (in my case) usb://HP/Photosmart%20C3100%20series?serial=CN7B1C70BF04P9 is used. Now it prints like a charm!

However. when you want to use hp-level scanner etc. The printer isn't able to print anymore. After a reboot (i guess a cups restart might work as well) printing resumes.

Very buggy result i know, but i am happy right now.
