Howto? Print from wireless laptop to USB on Desktop

Asked by benzene

[Previously posted to ubuntu forums: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=950020]

Seems like this should be simple, but I've found nothing that says how to do it. (Please point me if I've missed it.)

I have a desktop running a fully current Hardy. It has an HP F300 series printer/scanner attached via USB, with hplip installed. Runs great. I have system-config-printer set up with access control showing nothing and the server set to share this printer.

I have a laptop also running a fully current Hardy. I can print a test page to the desktop's printer using CUPS. I have hplip installed--except it complains it can't find that printer. When I try to set up ipp in the system-config-printer server section, I get asked for a password for root, and I'd rather not set up a root account. Same thing if I use "other" and specify hp protocol, as in

hp:/net/Officejet_F300_series?ip=192.168.1.2

Is there a way to get printing and scanning working from the wireless laptop without setting up a root account in the desktop?

Can anyone verify that it works if one does set up a root account?

Thanks.

HPLIP doesn't support sharing a printer, however you can do a google search such as:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=com.ubuntu%3Aen-US%3Aunofficial&hs=SXx&q=ubuntu+share+printer&btnG=Search

or perhaps this will help:

Thanks for your support of HPLIP!

Thanks for the response.

I can already print from both machines with cupsys. I just want HPLIP on both machines to talk to it. But if I understand what you're saying, it's "one printer, one HPLIP installation"? HPLIP installations on two machines can't both talk to a single linux print server? Right?

How about using IPP?

What if I set up a printer on a Samba server? Can I use HPLIP on two machines to talk to that?

Is there HP hardware that can I use to resolve this issue? A JetDirect server, maybe?

I love the way HPLIP runs my F350. I'd just like to be able to print and scan with it from more than one machine.

Thanks again.

If you want to use HPLIP on both systems then yes using a Jetdirect would allow this to happen. The problem with sharing the printer via smb is that HPLIP wont communicate with the device, although smb/ipp should allow basic printing to work.

We do test with HP Jetdirect devices to ensure they work correctly. I wouldn't recommend a third party device because we don't test with it and more often than not they wont work correctly.

Hope this helps.
