Deskjet F4180 prints everything in green

Asked by RagonichaFulva

1. Your Linux Distribution and version: Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron

2. Your printer make/model: HP Deskjet F4180

3. If possible, run 'hp-check -t' and post the output: Look at the end of the message.

4. A detailed explanation of your problem: I have installed the printer, although the .ppd that HPLIP offers is for Deskjet F4100. The printer is plugged to the Ubuntu PC and I share it in a network with a Windows system that can print normally through the network. The problem comes when I want to print from my Ubuntu system. Sometimes it rints part of the webpage in black ink, but now it always prints in green ink and even the test page comes out in green instead of black. I am using non-official cartridges, but the problem can't come from here, because printing from Windows through the network is correct.

I addition, it frequently tells me that the printer is running out of ink, although the lights in the printer don't blink.

I have upgraded HPLIP to v.2.8.9 but the problem is still there (by the way, after doing it, the printers administrator of ubuntu has dissapeared).

5. Steps to recreate the problem: N/A

Herewith I enclose the "hp-check -t" command output:

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper
dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

HPLIP doesn't support sharing a printer to a windows system. If you are sharing your printer more than likely you are using the cups/usb backend. For HPLIP to work correctly the printer needs to be configured to use the hp backend.

From the hp-check it appears that there is no queue using the hp backend:

warning: No queues found.

Try running sudo hp-setup to configure the printer--do you have the same "everything printing in green" problem?

Hi Aaron,

Actually, the printer works perfectly when shared with a Windows system.

I have used hp-setup, but there doesn't appear any reference on how to activate the hp backend.

If you run hp-setup the printer will be configured to use the hp backend. Please run hp-check again and post the output. I want to check to be sure the queue was created okay.

The black ink (text) is still printed in green. When I make a photocopy in B/W (so it doesn't work through my GNU/Linux) it appears in black.

Everything looks okay. It's still printing in green only? Run hp-levels and post the output. Also run hp-info.

Does the printer print correctly on a windows system?

I'll change the cartridge to see if the colour ink cartridge can affect somehow in the black ink printing.

My apologies.

I still don't understand it, but once I changed the colour ink everything worked OK.

How on earth can the printer use the black ink correctly when I print from Windows through the net and it doesn't use it when I print from GNU/Linux?

Nevertheless, as I said, once I replaced the colour cartridge everything worked fine.

Thank you very much for your assistance and patience.

Thanks a lot!
Finally, my HP Deskjet F4180 prints black instead of yellow/green/pink/whatever.

This should be noted on the FAQ page :)
