HP LaserJet 5 - which driver to select?

Please help me.
openprinting.org advises hplip for HP LaserJet 5 printer, but I cannot find HP LaserJet 5 (which I have) in hplip supported printer listing (only hplj 5SI, 5l, 5P, 5MP, but not 5 only), which of them should I select in CUPS selection box? I have tried gutenprint driver which works, but at 600dpi is quality of gray levels very bad - worse than at 300dpi (at 300dpi is raster visible at gradients, but overall quality is better, my hplj 5 has installed 24M RAM). I want to try also hplip, but no luck.

I have tried almost all ppds, and working PPDs are for 5MP. Best for 600DPI output is for me HP LaserJet 5MP hpijs pcl3, 3.16.11, problems are only with margins offset (picture is too much on top and left) and very nonlinear gray output (too light gray levels even with density to max), but overall output qulity is good. I have look into PPD and will try to adjust margins somehow, if it will be possible.
My question is - Is possible to add to PPD also some printer ICC profile, that solve gray levels before it sends it to printer in CUPS? I do not need complete callibration, maybe only gamma adjustment. Is some way how to generate such profile by myself?
I plan to try download some "flat" profile and modify it with some program from agryllcms.
Has someody experiences with printer ICC profile generation/modification?

Complete name is HP LaserJet 5, on self-test page is also HP LaserJet 5M (but not on case)

Hi,

HPLIP has support for HP LaserJet 5L. You can try the manual selection of ppd from HPLIP-3.16.11/ppd/hpcups/ during hp-setup.
