need linux driver for hp940c printer
I have an Acer Aspire One netbook with a Linux OS. It recognizes my HP 940c printer, but does not print. I've been told I need a Linux driver for my HP 940c. Where/how can I get one?

Thanks for your interest in using your DeskJet 940C on Linux.
The 940C is supported by HPLIP--however we currently don't have any instructions for installing on Linpus.
The HPLIP project works actively and directly with various Linux distributions to support the highest number of printers and Linux distros and versions. Linpus does not currently include a version of HPLIP and we are actively investigating how to support HPLIP on Linpus to better serve the needs of our customers. We consider this a high priority and hope to have support for Linpus in the very near future.
HPLIP takes the needs and requests of our customers and users very seriously and we apologize for any inconvenience.
This is not a typical "form" post. However there have been so many requests for support in Linpus that it's easier to respond to each request with the same information.
We appreciate your support and feedback.
Thanks for contacting HPLIP.

We're recently released a package for the Acer Aspire One (Linpus)
system. You can get more information about the package here:
http://
For instructions on downloading and installing go here:

We appreciate any feedback and apologize for the delay in this solution.
Thanks for your support of HPLIP--we appreciate it.

Hi Aaron:
Thanks for creating a solution to my HP printer issue. Unfortunately when I
clicked on the download nothing happened. How can I download the file to my
Aspire One?

Hey Ann,
That's odd, I can download it okay. But anyway try this:
press alt-ft
type in terminal, press enter
when the black screen comes up type:
cd Desktop
then:
wget http://
Then follow the rest of the instructions for installing the package.
Hope this helps.

Hi Aaron:
Thanks again for trying to help me.
I still can't get it to work. Have you tried it on an Aspire One? I don't
have a blank screen--at least I don't know how to get one. And I don't have
a desktop, just the icons that come up when I start my Aspire One. I did
alt-f2, but nothing happened that I could see.

Hey Ann,
I have tested the package on the Acer Aspire and the instructions I documented worked for me...
Nothing happens when you press Alt-F2? The Acer does have the icons instead of a desktop--so I think we're thinking the same thing.
Can we try rebooting your aspire and then trying alt-f2 again? It should work..
Thanks!

Hi Aaron:
I rebooted, then hit Alt-F2. I got the hplip (or whatever) link and checked
terminal. Then the screen went back to the usual icons. Where/how do I enter
the rest of the commands? And should I still type cd -/Desktop/?

Hi Aaron:
I finally solved the download/terminal problem. But when I tried to install
hplip-3.9.2/limpus I got a message saying "error updating software." The
details were lengthy but essentially said "conflicts between attempted
installs of hplip-2.7.7-6fc8 and hplip-3.9.2limpus-0
file/usr/
What should I do?
Thanks.

I give up. I've tried all sorts of ways to follow your instructions, but
none of them worked on my Acer Aspire One. I don't know what else to do.

At what step are you having a problem? If I can improve the instructions I gladly will...I've done the steps exactly on my Linpus system and it works okay..so more information at what step you are having a problem would be appreciated.

I had already downloaded the RPM program, so I checked to be sure it was
still on my desktop. It was. Then I did the following:

small box that says “Run in terminal,” (2) “Cancel,” and (3) “Run.”
Click “Run.”

Hey Ann,
The rpm command that you run removes libsane-hpaio--so if you are getting an error that it's not installed that's correct. I'll add some information so that if other users see this they know to continue with the other steps.
You can go ahead and continue running the other steps and let me know if you have any other problems. :)

Hi Aaron:
*Thanks for all your help.* *That last code worked! *But when I went to the
next step (su -c "hp-setup") it could not find the driver and asked for the
USB number. I don't know what that number is. Is this something I have to
contact HP about?

Hi Aaron:
This is what I did. Should I go back and do every command again so I am
asked for my password?
[user@localhost ~]$ cd ~/Desktop/
[user@localhost Desktop]$ /usr/lib/
bash: /usr/lib/
[user@localhost Desktop]$

No, HPLIP is (should be) installed so doing the steps over again may make things worse.
Try running
su -c "/usr/lib/
and post the output.
Also run:
groups
and post the output as well.
Thanks.

Hi Aaron:
This is what I did:
[user@localhost ~]$ su -c "/usr/lib/
Password:
direct hp "Unknown" "HP Printer (HPLIP)"
[user@localhost ~]$
Then I connected the AA! to the HP printer and did:
[user@localhost ~]$ su -c "hp-setup"
Password:
The response was:
HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.2.linpus)
Printer/Fax Setup Utility ver. 8.0

error: No devices found. Please make sure your printer is properly connected
and powered-on.
error: No devices found. Please make sure your printer is properly connected
and powered-on.
Done.
[user@localhost ~]$
Then I tried to find the printer manually, I was asked for the USB ID for
the printer, which was described as the USB bus ID dot the USB device ID.
How can I find this information, or do I need it?
You also asked me to run groups. How do I do this?

It doesn't look like HPLIP is detecting the printer. Try powercycling the printer and running hp-setup again?

Just unplug the printer from it's power source and plug it back in and turn it on. :)

Aaron solved my problem and enabled me to print from my Linux OS Acer Aspire One netbook to my HP 940c printer. He was very patient with me and guided me through to codes that worked. Now I am a happy camper, thanks to Aaron.
