Channel Write Error for hp P1005

Asked by Hamish Jnr

Hi Again,
My HP P1005 printing success has been patchy, and currently it will not print anything. Running hp-check -t brings up the result that the communication is OK and that HPLIP is installed correctly. The issue appears to be that the required plugin is not installed. (the HP webpage for this printer states that a plugin is REQUIRED, their emphasis.)

I have run hp-setup again to try to reinstall the printer and when I am prompted to download the plugin all goes well until the firmware installation phase. The output at this stage from hp-setup looks like this:

"Downloading firmware to device hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_P1005?serial=BB0AGW2...
error: Channel write error
error: An error occured: Device I/O error"

The install program at this stage tells me that the plugin installation was successful, but this is not the case! This is confirmed by hp-check and the fact that the printer sits idle and apparently deaf to all work orders!

Also, when plugging the printer in I see a series of orange light flashes before the green light stays on steady. Does this mean anything?

Cycling the printer power has no effect; neither does unplugging and replugging the usb cable; neither does rebooting the pc. All these measures result in the print queue saying "processing" indefinitely.

What do I do to resolve this issue? I am running Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. Any help would be much appreciated. I have included the results from hp-setup & hp-check -t below.

Looking forward to resolving this issue!

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Saving output in log file: hp-check.log

Cameron,

Try power cycling the printer, then run: tail -f /var/log/syslog and then run hp-firmware again and post the output in the syslog.

Are you using a usb hub? (if yes try not using it) What make/model of computer are you using? Can you plug the printer into a different usb port?

Aaron,

Here's the result of tail -f /var/log/syslog, then hp-firmware, and then tail -f /var/log/syslog again.

I don't use a usb hub. The printer is plugged directly into the back of the machine. I have tried plugging it into a variety of ports with no apparent success.

The really stupid thing is that I moved some furniture around yesterday and broke my pc down and set it up again in the new position, and when I turned it on, the printer worked! What bugs me is the fact that I have no idea why it works or doesn't work. It seems to be completely random! But even the printer working is not solving the main issue I have, which is the channel write error and plugin download failure.

I wonder if my system is damaged in some way...?

Anyway, here's the feed.

Thanks for the continuing assistance!

Cameron.

The printer works on Windows systems. I tried it on a friends laptop and it worked well. When it does work, it works really well! The intermittancy is what bugs me!

Success! I can print... finally!!

The solution is to upgrade to Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid. Works perfectly.

Thanks for all the assistance.
