Unable to connect to M402dw from Fedora 25

Asked by markefuller

I am trying to get a network printer setup in my office. We don't even care to mess around with wireless (although we couldn't get that working, either) and would be perfectly happy with the thing wired into the wall and printing over the wired connection.

I am running Fedora 25, although others in my group have Arch and Ubuntu.
The printer is a HP LaserJet Pro M402dw.
It is fully supported: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/laserjet/hp_laserjet_m402dw.html

Finally, I see the printer on one of our Windows machines, added it, and printed to it, so the thing does work (flawlessly) on that OS.

I have tried googling these problems and can't get it sorted out.
I have already tried reinstalling cups-filters and adding a2ps

There are (at least) two problems:
1) My firewall settings aren't allowing hp-setup to search for and find the printer (and the instructions provided by HP at http://hplipopensource.com/node/375 don't solve the problem).
I can see the printer on the network when I use the built-in printer manager or when I run hp-setup with the firewall disabled.

2a) With the firewall disabled, I can see and add the printer in hp-setup, but then I cannot print a test page, with the following error:
error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hp:/net/HP_LaserJet_M402dw?ip=169.254.133.81
error: Unable to print to printer. Please check device and try again.

2b) If I just try to use the default printer manager, I see my printer and select it, then select the correct ppd.gz driver from /usr/share/cups/model/HP/ and I get the following error:
There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'client-error-document-format-not-supported'

Thanks for even just reading this far.

Additionally, I ran hp-check -t:
No required or optional dependencies were reported and the only error was that I previously reported under 2a:

error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hp:/net/HP_LaserJet_M402dw?ip=169.254.133.81
error: unable to open channel
error: Communication status: Failed

Hi,

We may need the syslog for what exactly the error is. Can you try the following command in one terminal "tail -f /var/log/syslog 2>&1 | tee ~/logs.txt" and give print in other terminal. This will capture the logs in home directory. You can post the log here.

Regards,
Ajay

I don't appear to have a /var/log/syslog
running "locate syslog" doesn't return anything that looks like what you want

Hi,
Are you still seeing this issue? Can you try the printer connectivity in the latest hplip driver 3.18.9 and update?

We fixed this some time ago.
The problem was actually our department's IT and not the printer, but it
took a few phone calls with them to get that answer.
