C7280 can't print to photo tray, can't install latest driver

Asked by Normand C

I just bought this multifonction printer to be able to (among other things) print 4x6 photos in Ubuntu 8.04 using F-Spot. My brother who has a D7100 series printer does this without hurdle.

Using Ubuntu's HPLIP (version 2.8.2), in either Eye of Gnome or F-Spot, I am unable to use the photo tray. The printer grabs the first sheet in the tray, then stops with an error: wrong paper format. When in the print dialog, under the "page setup" tab, the "paper type" button is greyed out, I can only choose the paper source. I can't use the main tray for 4x6 paper either.

I am not the only one with this problem. A few people on Ubuntu-fr forums have this same problem with either C5180 or C6180 models.

I tried printing a photo directly from HPLIP Toolbox: the printer uses the letter paper in the main tray, and prints the selected picture on 4 separate sheets, with 1/4 of the image on each sheet!

So I figured that I'd try installing the latest driver 2.8.7. I downloaded the automatic install, followed the installation walkthrough. Unfortunately, the install stops at the BUILD AND INSTALL step with the following error:

error: Configure failed with error: python-devel not found

As I'm not yet experienced in Linux, I'm not sure what is needed. A search in Synaptic couldn't find anything with that precise name. What should I install that would allow the completion of the HPLIP install?

At this point, I'm considering returning the printer... Help!

Thanks

Normand C.

Normand,

The best way to configure the printer for printing 4x6 prints is to create a new printer queue (run "sudo hp-setup" in terminal and name the printer queue something that you will know it's for printing 4x6 prints) then run hp-toolbox, click print settings, on the drop down select the 4x6 printing queue, and then configure the paper size, print tray and quality. Then when you print from eye of gnome, etc select the 4x6 printing queue and it should print to the photo tray.

Hope this helps.

Hi Aaron,

I did as you suggested, and using this printer profile, I still get the same error on the printer. I see the photo tray retract inside the printer, shortly after I get an error on the printer's LCD screen saying «Wrong paper format. Push OK to cancel». Then the printer rejects the sheet.

I noticed that when creating the new printer, I have two possible PPD files to select, both described HP Photosmart C7260. Both result with the same photo tray error.

What about the 2.8.7 install? What's this python-devel that I need? I have a bunch of python packages installed, including 2.4 and 2.5...

Thanks.

A follow-up...

I installed python2.5-dev through Synaptic, and was then able to install the latest 2.8.7 drivers with the automatic install.

But... I still have the wrong paper format error when trying to print from F-Spot. I have the same error in GIMP as well.

Have anyone ever succeeded in using the photo tray on the C7280?!?

I can print to the photo tray on the Photosmart 7280.

Run: cat /home/username/.cups/lpoptions

and post the output.

Where username replace with your linux username.

Thanks!

Okay is looks like the papersize didn't get set. Is it set to 4x6 (or whatever paper size you have in the tray) in hp-toolbox?

Yes it is. Under Print settings, the media size for the "Photosmart_C7200_photo" queue is "Photo or 4x6 inch index card".

The photo tray on my C7280 doesn't seem to accept anything larger than 4x6.

Run: cat /home/username/.cups/lpoptions again and post the output.

Try also setting the paper type by going to http://localhost:631, click printers, click set printer options and then set the paper size.

Hi,

still the same result:

Default Photosmart_C7200
Dest Photosmart_C7200_photo InputSlot=PhotoTray Quality=1200PhotoCMYKFullBleed

Also went to the CUPS page, and the Media Size is already set to "Photo or 4x6 inch index card".

Oh okay. Sorry try also setting the fit to page to yes. It's in hp-toolbox > print settings.

What application are you printing from?

F-Spot. But I get the same error with Eye of Gnome or Gimp.

Okay. Lets try this.

Media Size: 4x6
Media Source: Photo Tray
Fit to Page: On

(just to double check)

Then click the Actions tab, click test page. Does that print as expected?

The test page prints on letter paper. I did specify the Photosmart_7200_photo queue, with media size 4x6/media source photo tray.

Go to http://localhost:631/printers
Change the default settings to Letter, Default Printer tray.
Save

Run hp-toolbox
Click the printer
Click printer settings
Click the drop down at the top to select the photo printer
Make sure media size is 4x6
tray is photo
fit to page on

Close the toolbox

Run:

lpr -PPhotosmart_C7200_photo filename.png

Should print to the photo tray.

I'm still working on why gimp and eye of gnome wont print to the photo tray...but I'm having the same problem.

Can you also try printing using gwenview? That one seems to be working correctly. It's a kde app but works in gnome. Then be sure to select the printer, then properties change the papersize to 4x6 and select the photo tray.

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for sticking with me.

We're making progress: using your terminal command works, although it doesn't print borderless. I have 2mm borders on the side, none on top and 10mm border on bottom. Fit to page is on in hp-toolbox.

I just finished installing gwenview, will be reporting back in 10.

Just printed from Gwenview, and I have a similar result as the command line, but the borders are larger by a factor of ±2X.

I don't care much if I can't print correctly from EoG or Gimp. I mostly wish to print from F-Spot, as I want to use it to organize, preview and print my photo collection (8000+ images)...

Out of curiosity, I ran again the "cat /home/username/.cups/lpoptions" command, here's what it says now:

Dest Photosmart_C7200_photo PageRegion=Photo PageSize=Photo

Odd, it doesn't say 4x6.

I was able to get gwenview to print borderless. I clicked:

file, print
properties on the printer
margins, use custom margins, 0 out all the edges
driver settings;
media size: 4x6
media source: photo
print out mode: photo
resolution, quality, ink type, media: 1200 dpi photo fullbleed

That seems to do full borderless.

I'll look at F-Spot and have some information for you in a few min.

Hi Aaron,

I see no place to change margins in the properties dialog. See screen capture:

And I have two media size entries.

What version of gwenview are you using? I also posted a shot of my version. What distro are you using as well?

It's version 2.0.3, using KDE 4.0.3. I installed it throught the Add/Remove menu. Wow, can't believe they downgraded the functionality from 1.4.2 to 2.0.3! It may have something to do with KDE 4 I guess.

The screenshot I previously posted is the windows that appears (just noticed the window title bar was cropped out) when I click the Properties button.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04. I guess you're on 7.10 then?

Well, since Gwenview can use the photo tray (although my version doesn't support margins editing), I thought of trying out other image programs.

I installed DigiKam, since it's apparently the KDE equivalent of F-Spot. Well believe it or not, I couldn't find a print option.

Then I tried Gnome Photo Printer 0.7.0-1. I installed it through the Add/remove... menu. Well it works! I can use the photo tray, and I can configure the margins to zero, so it prints borderless. The plus for me is that I can print multiple files at once, and it supports drag & drop from Nautilus or F-Spot (even better).

To sum it up, using Gnome Photo Printer solves my problem. Should I click the Problem Solved button? Because F-Spot still can't print to the photo tray, and I sure would like to know if this can be corrected.

Thanks for your help Aaron!

Sometimes applications do their own thing when printing and we don't have any control over that.

But anyway glad we got you going!

All the best,

Hello
I'm using an HP Photosmart Premium C310a -printer.
Had the same issues: not being able to choose the photo-paper-tray when wanting to print from within F-spot or other apps.
I read this thread through ... and installed Gnome Photo Printer as well ..
and indeed, that did the trick.
(No need to try install a "second" printer or any other of the suggested solutions)

Thx for the help/advice ... shows again what a bit of RTFM (or RTFF in this case ;) ) and some typical-linux-solidarity can do.
I'll keep a subscription to this thread anyway, because I'm still interested in possible solutions for F-spot and GIMP.
Bye for now

Can you help with this problem?
