hpijs: unable to open PrintContext object err=16

Try deleting the printer queue and running hp-setup to configure the printer again. It looks like the plugin is not installed for the printer. You could try running hp-plugin as well.

The error: unable to open PrintContext object err=16 might be a problem with ghostscript. You could try re-installing gs..

OK, a couple of important points.

When reinstalling, I got the error message:

So, as suggested, I ran hp-plugin manually.

Then in /var/log/cups/error_log, there's this suspicious message:

Looking for foomatic-rip, there's indeed no such filter. There is however foomatic-rip-hplip.

OK, so adding a symbolic link from foomatic-rip to foomatic-rip-hplip prints the test page but it hangs at the end. The error message is:

This question was expired because it remained in the 'Open' state without activity for the last 15 days.

Still waiting for a response...

"ERROR: 40017" means the P1505 firmware could not read the "E-LABEL" on the toner cartridge. Either the sensor on the cartridge is bad or this is not a HP cartridge.

The next version of HPLIP will ignor this error.

it seems that hp-systray wont start because of lackinf dbus support, but python-dbus is installed I'll paste

Some additional comments on this issue:

The printer was brand new out of the box, so there's no issue with third party toner cartridges as was suggested. It also works fine when printing from a Mac, so a faulty sensor is unlikely.

This printer requires a plugin to operate. Please run hp-setup to correctly install. Error 16 means that hpijs
was unable to initialize the printer
The -sDeviceModel="HP LaserJet" is incorrect, it should be -sDeviceModel="HPLaserJet P1505"
This happened because the ppd installed is the wrong one. hp-setup will lead you through correct installation
