Duplex printing with Cups does not work

Asked by Malte

Duplex printing does not work with HPLIP (ver 2.7.7) and Cups (ver 1.1.12) on openSUSE 10.3.

I added a duplex unit (C6463A) to my HP deskjet 920C and /etc/cups/ppd/deskjet920c.ppd contains the following entry:
*DefaultDuplex: DuplexNoTumble

Nevertheless, when I print something the printer still uses two sheets instead of just one. I use the HPLIP backend and besides this issue the printer just works fine. I would be thankful for any hint where to start debugging this issue.

Actually the best way to configure duplex is to run hp-toolbox, click print settings and change the duplex mode. Also you can change the duplex setting in cups http://localhost:631. it's generally not advised to modify the ppd file.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your hint. I first restored the original PPD file and then changed the duplex setting with the hp-toolbox, but it still does not work... maybe the duplex unit has a damage.

I just see one maybe improtant thing, when I run "hp-info" i see the value "duplexer" is 0
What could it mean? The printer does not see the duplex unit? Maybe a hardware damage / bug somewhere?

I'm sorry for the many messages, but I guess I found the source of the trouble: the 920C does not support automatic duplexing at all... technically, a duplex unit can be attached, but only the HP DeskJet 930 and up do support the duplex unit. The 920C and 930C share the same case and a duplexer can be attached to both, but only the 930C has the needed circuit to support it...
