hplip installation reports error: 'make' command failed with status code 2

hplip installation reports error: 'make' command failed with status code 2

libphoto is installed.

Running make from the directory reports:

creating libsane-hpaio.la
/bin/sed: can't read driver/libhpip.la: No such file or directory
libtool: link: `driver/libhpip.la' is not a valid libtool archive
make: *** [libsane-hpaio.la] Error 1

I'm running Kubuntu 8.04

In the hplip source directory please run:

./check.py -t

and post the output.

I have the same problem with Ubuntu 8.04 and a HP LaserJet 1018.

I used these instuctions http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/ and got the printer working right away.

You could try a driver for the HP P1005 from the same guy found here http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/ (also including instructions).

The last step for me was to add the printer (http://localhost:631/).
