How to enable duplex printing on Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M477fdw in Ubuntu 16.04?

Asked by Vladimir Dobriakov

Just bought a brand new Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M477fdw.

Using System Settings > Printing in Ubuntu 16.04 added the printer. The printer has been automatically recognized and drivers automatically installed.

Simple printing works, but duplex printing under Ubuntu is disabled in the printing dialog. E.g. in Atril PDF viewer: Print > Page Setup > Two-sided is "Not available" and greyed out.

Ist it a bug in /etc/cups/ppd/HP-Color-LaserJet-MFP-M477fdw.ppd ? Is there a simle fix, where I can add the missing configuration lines?
Or is feature set of HP printers is generally reduced under Ubuntu?

Tried to install Binary (proprietary?) plugin as described here http://hplipopensource.com/node/309, but `hp-plugin` just goes into an endless loop. Running `sudo hp-plugin -ldebug` shows it trying endlessly

/plugins/hplip-3.16.3-plugin.run

Solved, duplex works now. The problem was the www.openprinting.org server was down and plugin installation did not work.

It is probably not even needed to install hplip from source code (from scratch). Ubuntu has already the free (open) part of hplib installed. Just need to install hp-plugin and add the printer.

Under Printers > HP_Color_LaserJet_MFP_M477fdw > Properties > Installed Options now appears "Duplex Unit". Check the box. And/or under Properties > Printer Options > Two-Sided select "Long-Edge Binding" or other option.

Alternatively whenever printing, in the Linux print dialog open "Properties" and under "Two-Sided" select the desired option.
