Hi

I have a problem when printing (full bleed) on to HP photo 6x4 paper.
- I configure the printer for 6x4 600 dpi, Color, Full Bleed Black + Color Cartr.
- I have a photo that has been resized to 6x4 using gimp (it is 600 DPI)
- If I dont use full bleed I get a border (twice as wide at the bottom of the paper)
- If I use select 'Photo or 4x6 inch index card' I get a white border at the bottom only
- If I use select 'Photo with tare off tab' I get full bleed all over. (This is what I want)

Questions:
1) What are the best settings for my printer for Photo 4x6?

2) Is it possible to get the printer to autodetect (from the photo size) what tray to use. I am forever printing my photos in the center of an A4 page.

3) If I add 2 devices to the same printer. One set to A4 300dpi and One set to 4x6 600dpi Photo Tray, I can select at print time which one to use. When I do this I still have to select the page size 'Photo with tare off tab' or it prints with borders. If I choose the default it still uses the A4 paper.

Currently the easiest way for my family to use this printer is to save the pic to an SD card, put it in the front of the printer and go from there. They get nice borderless prints. To do this from the computer is a pain.

What I would like from you is a 'This is the correct way to do this'

This is a fab printer that currently works better using Windows. As I am a MS hater and a Linux fan I want it to be as good (if not better) than windows. You have done a fantastic job of HPLIP and the problems I am having are small I agree but if there is a proper way to do this then I really want to sort it.

Just as a last request could the phrase 'full bleed' be replaces with 'borderless' or 'edge to edge' I have spen hours trawling the net and only now understand what full bleed is (for months I have not been able to print a photo properly). My wife and kids would have NO chance.

I hope you can help me with this. I feel frustrated by issues that lower the overall Linux/HP experience. When I say to my wife and friends that Linux is better I have to add 'EXCEPT'. This is frustrating because I want Linux to work/win/beat the crap out of MS, etc.

Regards

Stuart Davies.

What you want to do is create a second printer queue (name it for example photo, etc), then run hp-toolbox, click the printer, click print settings, then from the drop down (on the top) select the "photo" queue and configure the queue as:

Media Size Photo or Index 4x6
Media Source Photo Tray
Quality 1200dpi fullbleed

Then when you print to the other queue it will already be configured to print with the settings above.

I'll also look into your fullbleed question..

Hope this helps and thanks for your support of HPLIP.

Ok thanks for that:

Question 1. By new print queue do you mean Setup A new Device?

Question 2. When I print, why do I need to select 'Photo with tare off tab'. This is not the obvious choice, 'Photo or 4x6 inch index card' is closer but I get white boarder on the bottom edge. If I have gone to trouble of setting up a new DEVICE/QUEUE as recommended above why do I have to select any thing.

It's just confusing and error prone. If you do it all the time then you get used to it but what about the other members of my family who do an occasional print.

Yes you'd run hp-setup again and name the printer queue something like, photoprinter (etc).

You'll want to select Photo or 4x6 index, also try setting the option fit to page.

I have a similar problem on my C5580. If I use just the 4x6 option I get about a 0.4" border on the trailing edge of the picture (the last part to come out of the printer). If I use 4x6 with tab and full bleed it works properly (or at least appears to).

I had the same problem with my Photosmart C6180 and this is how I solved the problem in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic:

Install newest Hplip for your system
Go to System -> Admin -> Printers
Go to your printer properties
Add a new PPD from http://toysegutta.no/divfiler/Photosmart-C6180.ppd and use the new PPD as is
Open your preffered image in "Eye of Gnome" (default)
File -> Page Properties -> choose your printer -> Photo with tear off-tab -> choose orientation
Ctrl+P to print
Print out in 1200dpi on 10x15cm (4x6")

This is it :)
