Gutenprint setup with b8850

Asked by David Vincent-Jones

HP Photosmart Pro B8850 with Ubuntu 7.10

The printer is working well with some graphics programs but I would like to be able to also print under Gutenprint.
The B8850 is not directly shown in the GP supported HP printer list.

The GP setup it is asking for either a 'PPD' file location or a Custom Command.

I notice that with my older printer the command was "lp -s -d 'Photosmart_8700_series' -oraw "
That 8700 was also not directly listed in the setup but appeared to work well with this string.

Is there something similar that I should be using?

Thank you

David

If you are trying to use Gutenprint alone without hplip you'll want to try Gutenprint support.

http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/

Hope this helps.

I had assumed that all program print drivers would eventually need to utilize hplip for successful output.

Programs such as the Gimp and Cinepaint only provide a Gutenprint option, although through CUPS, for printing ... as far as I know.

By installing some added GTK-dev options I am now able to use Gutenprint and it appears to be correctly working with the hplip driver.

Thanks for the help
