hplip-3.16.8.run hangs on Ubuntu 12.04

Asked by Phil Norisez

I downloaded hplip-3.16.8 twice and ran it four different times. It always gets to a point where it is deleting the current hplip and hangs. I have also had this with other, recent hplip versions. What could be causing the hang, and how do I circumvent it so that I can use the package? Here are the last few lines on stdout:

I just ran it again resulting in the following on stdout:

After several attempts, I finally got something functional. At least it prints the test print. I'm unsure why, but it seems like hplip 3.16.8 sets up the printer (Officejet Pro 8600) in a stopped state. Anyway, what I had to do was go into the printer's web page, and start the printer. Then things started working. For now, setting this to problrm solved, pending how it behaves over the next few hours.
