Duplicate printers appear when using HPLIP (CUPS gui system-config-printer 0.7.81)

Asked by Alexandre Madar

HPLIP installed on Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04. Installation went fine but now there are two almost identical printers listed in the CUPS front-end, system-config-printer 0.7.81 (in Hardy, System > Administration > Printing).

One of the printers appears to be using the HPLIP backend (Device URI says hp:/usb/Photosmart_C5100_series?serial=MY75AP90Q604MK and the make & model says HP Photosmart c5100 series Foomatic/hpijs, hpijs 2.8.6.

The other printer listed seems to be autocreating itself using the "regular" (?) USB backend (Device URI says usb://HP/Photosmart%20C5100%20series?serial=MY75AP90Q604MK and make & model says HP Photosmart c5100 series Foomatic/hpijs, hpijs 2.8.6).

It's confusing when printing to have two identical printers. Whenever I delete the USB printer, it reappears all by itself after a while. Any workarounds or suggestions appreciated!

Thank you.
Andre Madar

I've searched and haven't been able to locate directions for turning off the printer auto detection. It might be something simple and I'm missing it--I'm going to convert this to a bug and assign to system-config-printer and lets see if the ubuntu team has any suggestions.

In the meanwhile perhaps you can change the name of the usb:/ printer to something that will let you know which is which.

Sorry I couldn't help more.

OK, thanks for checking it out. I'll keep looking too (it does sound like it would be a fairly straightforward config file change, doesn't it?) I did try renaming the usb:/ printer but unfortunately at next power cycle a THIRD local printer appears!
