After installing a scanner (scanjet 5200c usb) and sane, i can no longer print (hp 5550 usb)

I've been using the printer (hp deskjet 5550) for a while on the system. Though the device manager had trouble recognizing the device, it worked perfectly via cups. (in fact, i think i've just fixed the issue with the device manager now that it shows the details of the printer)

recently, I've added the hp scanjet 5200c via usb. The scanner works fine over xsane, but printer stopped functioning. This happened few months ago, resolved only be uninstalling sane-related programs. I was hoping there would be another way out.

The printer is recognized both by hardware detection of the OS, as well as hplip when trying to install the printer from scratch. However, nothing gets printed at all. Going through the error log shows a line:

D [16/Jul/2008:00:23:04 -0400] [Job 81] prnt/backend/hp.c 636: INFO: open device failed; will retry in 30 seconds...

So i'm guessing there's some sort of a communication problem.

I've installed CUPS, hplip, sane-backends, xsane and all necessary ports via freebsd port system.
I've also tried deleting the printer driver and reinstalling the printer driver.
CUPS and hplip was installed before sane-related ports.
I'm not sure what more can be said of what i have done.
