HP Device Manager indicates my HP c4200 series printer is "Device is busy, powered off, or unplugged."

Asked by oldwierdal

I have tried uninstalling this printer and re-installing it with CUPS http//localhost:631, CentOS system-config-printer, HP Device Manager, and also with hplip-2.8.6.run autoinstaller. It always ends up the same.
What happened? Moreover, how can I fix it?
I run on CentOS 5.2.
$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.18-53.1.21.el5 #1 SMP Tue May 20 09:34:18 EDT 2008 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux
I downloaded a new driver, and tried again. The installer proceeded without errors. When it came to the point of finishing the install, with 'Print Test Page' checked, I clicked 'Finish' but nothing happens. No help. Same results.
$ ls ~/hpc4240/newdriver
hplip-2.8.6 hplip-2.8.6.run

Thanks for any help you can give.

First, thank you for responding. Second, please accept my apology for not posting back here promptly when I found the culprit.
I had been working on another, completely unrelated problem with CrossOver Office, on CentOS 5.2. It seems that something in the code of one or more of the newest patches to the CentOS kernel was causing CrossOver not to work. I had been experimenting with compiling a new kernel, and that new kernel, 2.6.25, somehow modified the usb ports.
My solution was found by restoring a back-up version of CentOS to my backup hd, and re-installing the hp printer on that. It worked just fine. So, I reverted my main installation of CentOS back to the 5.1 level, and ran the CentOS update again.
My hp printer still works, and works well.
Again, thank you for your interest and response. And please forgive my bad manners for not posting back sooner.
