Low ink warning incorrect

Asked by allistair

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 and have a HP F2180 3 in 1 printer.

I have an Asus F2180 laptop.

I am very much a novice.

In the HP Device Manager, Supplies tab, it says the ink is very low in Tri-Colour, and only half full in Black. Both cartridges are full. It prints OK in Black but the colour is almost non existent. How can I reset whatever so that they both show full ?

I did a " $ hp-check -t" and the summary says there are 15 errors and/or warnings, and to click on http://hplip.sourceforge.net/install/index.html for installation instructions. However when I do a Google search it comes up with " did not match any documents"

The following is the check. I do not understand any of it. It appears that there are items missing. Is there an easy way for a rank novice like myself to correct the faults or should I try and find an expert ?

Thanks in advance for any help able to be given.

Good Day Allistair

Just curious, I'm not sure I'm understanding you.

Are you saying,

1. Black Printing is fine.
2. Color Printing ... barely prints color.
3. Ink Levels show low but you think the cartridges are new.

Thanks for the clarification.

Hi John, yes, both cartridges are full but the "supplies tab" in the
HPLIP window says the Black is half full and the tri-colour is empty.

I have two HP F2180 printers and the cartridges gets swapped between the
two, so I am picking that software is confused.

How do I reset whatever so that the laptop tells the printer there is
plenty of ink.

Cheers Allistair

Hi John,

1. Black printing OK
2. Colour printing, but very faint.
3. yes, both cartridges are full. I topped them both up just to make
sure, but the "supplies tab" in the HPLIP window says the Black is half
full and the tri-colour is empty.

I have two HP F2180 printers and the cartridges gets swapped between the
two, so I am picking that software is confused.

How do I reset whatever so that the laptop tells the printer there is

I'll check if there is a reset feature but I do not believe there is. If you're using the same cartridges and refilling its very possible the printer see these as empty.

Hi John, I have just been told by someone that the introductory
cartridge has been programmed so that it won't be recognised if it is
refilled. Don't know if that's true or not, and if that's possible. Is
so, I wonder if there is a way round that, as throwing out a perfectly
good cartridge when it runs out of ink is wasteful in the extreme.

Hi again John,

I sent an email to HP today and they say they do not have any blocking device in their cartridges. Although on the packaging it says that it is "Intended for single use only. Not licensed for modification. " Whatever that means.

It was the introductory cartridge that was refilled and giving problems.

I put in a new Introductory cartridge from the 2nd new printer I bought as a spare at the same time and the printer worked perfectly.

Closing this due to the fact that the issue is based on using refill ink in a starter cartridge.
