HP LaserJet 1300 doublesided printing

Ubuntu 8.04, HPLIP-2.8.5, LaserJet 1300. I cannot get manual double-sided printing to work. The printer should print one side of all the pages then pause for the pages to be flipped and inserted into the manual chute. I installed HPLIP-2.8.5 but I may have missed a configuration step. Any ideas how best to modify the HPLIP configuration for manual double-sided printing with the software pause?

HPLIP does not support the manual duplex process. To manually print duplex follow these steps:
