How do I set up my OfficeJet j5780 on Ubuntu Server (CLI)

Asked by Nexist

I am trying to set up a print server using Ubuntu Server 8.04. I cannot figure out how to tell it to use the HPLIP driver & to generally act like a aprint server on my network. Once I have it set up for the Linux boxes, I intend to share it with the Windows machines via Samba.

I am only interested in printing, not scanning, at this time.

System: A P4 I had laying around
OS: Ubuntu Server 8.04
Printer: HP OfficeJet J5780

CUPS: 5.0.2
HPLIP: 2.8.2

I think I managed to configure it via the http://localhost:631/admin using the lynx browser.

It successfully printed a test page. (identifying itself as CUPS v1.3.x)

I then edited the cupsd.conf file by adding two lines (as marked below):

# Only listen for connections from the local machine.
Listen localhost:631
Listen 10.11.93.2:631 #added DAR
Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock

# Show shared printers on the local network.
Browsing On #changed from Off DAR
BrowseOrder allow,deny
BrowseAllow all
BrowseAddress @LOCAL

Was this correct?

That seems correct. HPLIP does not support network sharing--so configuring the printer with the cups backend is the best way to go. But sadly you wont have any of the additional functionality of the HPLIP driver.

Sorry about that.
