How do I enable high resolutions for scanning on OJ6310?

Asked by Stilor

I am using the Fedora 8 distribution; HPLIP package as in Fedora repositories (hplip-2.8.2-1.fc8). The HP OfficeJet 6310 is connected via Ethernet. Basic scanning works okay, with resolutions up to 600dpi.

The User's Guide says the device is capable of up to 2400dpi optical resolution. However, the xsane only suggests resolutions up to 600dpi. The hp-scan utility (part of HPLIP package), when supplied with "-r 1200" or "-r 2400" option, says that it's using 600dpi instead.

How do I configure HPLIP to allow for higher resolutions,1200dpi and 2400dpi?

HPLIP will scan at the hardware scan resolution for the device. In most cases the enhanced scanning resolution is support (in windows) by software enhancing. HPLIP does not support additional enhancing of the scan.

Sorry for any inconvenience, and thanks for your support of HPLIP.

Aaron,

I know that. I should have said that the User Guide explicitly states *OPTICAL* resolution of 2400dpi, and a software-enhanced resolution of "up to 19200dpi". Does your statement mean that OJ6310 only supports 600dpi optical resolution???

Regards,
Alex.

You could also refer to this link:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/printer/Officejet/1/storefronts/Q8061A%2523ABA

The "SPECS" tab on that page says:

Scanner resolution
     Optical: Up to 2400 dpi
     Enhanced: Up to 19200 dpi

Scanner bit depth
     48-bit

Could you tell me your specific model number? Is it just OJ 6310 or is it like 6310xyz?

Thanks

I'll check the part number when I am back home. But why does it matter? According to the link below, all 63xx models have optical scanning resolution of 2400dpi...

The label on the printer says just "6310". I checked part number and serial number:

P/N: Q8071A
S/N: CN810FV1BK

Strange thing is that the link above does not mention such P/N at all. Is that some new revision of 6310 or what? The device was purchased via HP Home and Office Store, so (I hope) it is a genuine HP printer :)

The P/N and S/N are from the label on the back of the printer. If I connect to its web interface, I get the following:

Model Name: Officejet 6300 series
Serial Number: CN81OFV1BK04J5
Firmware Version: R0602FxNx
Service ID: 18169
PCL Default Symbol Set: 341

And I contacted HP support to verify that; the model number is 6310 (base model).

To be clear..when you run xsane and change the "set scan resolution" (it's the first slider) you aren't able to set the setting to higher than 600dpi?

Yes, the rightmost position of the slider sets the resolution of 600dpi. I also tried to use the hp-scan utility, which resulted in the following output (I supplied --res=2400):

Using device hpaio:/net/Officejet_6300_series?ip=192.168.1.68
Opening connection to device...
warning: Using resolutions greater than 600 dpi will cause very large files to be created.
warning: This can cause the scan to take a long time to complete and may cause your system to slow down.
warning: Approx. number of bytes to read from scanner: 263.7 MB (276480000)
warning: Invalid value for resolution (resolution > max value of 600). Using 600.

The HPLIP scan driver uses the SCL protocol for supporting the officejet 6310. Windows uses a different scan protocol. Unfortunately the officejet 6310 does not support greater than 600dpi via SCL. The HPLIP SCL scan driver is a generalized driver for many HP products and we have no plans for supporting the other scan protocol.

So what this means is that for the OfficeJet 6310 we do support scanning but only up to 600dpi. Because this protocol is not being used anymore it's highly unlikely that we will be improving this functionality in the future.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Aaron
