hplip-2.8.5 fails to install Deskjet 6980 in OpenSUSE 11.0 RC1

Asked by Graham P Davis

I've successfully installed my Deskjet 6980 (in a wireless network) in OpenSUSE 10.3 using hplip-2.8.5 but have hit snags in release 11.0 (RC1).

(1) A message from the installer suggests that the shell wasn't able to install the missing dependencies because it didn't recognize that there was a working Internet connection.
"note: Installation of dependencies requires an active internet connection."
Normally, as far as I remember, the modules would be installed automatically. I've tried on two machines, one with wireless internet access and another with ethernet. Both installations are a clean install so nothing is there from 10.3.

I used YAST to install the missing dependencies and it got a bit further.

(2) The configuration failed with an "unknown" error.

The log for the attempted installation is as follows:

Jun 11 14:50:02 Wanderer python: hplip-install[4112]: error: Configure

I've also raised this in an OpenSUSE forum in case the problem can be solved from that end.

Thanks,

Graham

The hplip installer does not yet work with openSuse 11. You can try installing hplip manually, however the manual steps aren't updated for suse 11 yet either.

http://hplip.sourceforge.net/install/manual/distros/novell.html

I'm working on updating the installer and the instructions for the next release.

Sorry about that.
