Unable to print on Color Laserjet CP1515n

Asked by Dave Corrie

I have installed HPLIP 2.8.5 using the 'automatic installer' on my openSUSE 10.3 system. The Color Laserjet CP1515n printer is connected via USB. Everything appeared to install ok and the printer was recognised correctly.

When I try to print something, the printer light flashes and the LCD panel says 'Printing document', but no document is printed. The HP device manager says "Device communication error, code 5012". I see the following output in /var/log/messages:

if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built
HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and

Usually the errors you are seeing are related to permissions or possible hardware problem.

Can you try a different usb cable and/or usb port? Does the printer work on a different system?

The printer is attached to a dual boot system. In Windows Vista (same machine, cable and port) I am able to print.

I will try a different cable and usb port to see if that resolves the problem in Linux.

Ony for your information:

I noticed some user reports about weird USB problems
(in particular "I/O errors" regarding USB scanners)
when USB kernel modules for USB2 speed are used
which disappear as soon as only kernel modules
for USB1 low speed are used, see for a German example
http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-de/2007-04/msg00185.html

Therefore if you run at USB2 speed it might help to unload
those kernel module(s) and use out USB1 modules.
Which exact modules you need depend on your particular
USB hardware on your motherboard.

I tried with different usb ports and different cables, but without success.

From the dmesg output, I observed that the printer was using USB2 (ehci):
usb 1-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2
usb 1-2: new device found, idVendor=03f0, idProduct=4417
usb 1-2: new device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 1-2: Product: HP Color LaserJet CP1515n
usb 1-2: Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
usb 1-2: SerialNumber: 00CNAT835HKY
usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

I did 'rmmod ehci_hcd', reattached the printer and found it connected as USB1 (uhci):
usb 7-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
usb 7-1: new device found, idVendor=03f0, idProduct=4417
usb 7-1: new device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 7-1: Product: HP Color LaserJet CP1515n
usb 7-1: Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
usb 7-1: SerialNumber: 00CNAT835HKY
usb 7-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

I was not successful in printing. The result was the same as when the printer was connected via USB2.

I note that HPLIP v.2.8.5 is the first release that supports this printer. Is it possible there is a bug to be worked out here?

Many thanks to all for their help so far.

I have managed to work around the problem by using my distribution's configuration tool (YaST). I configured the printer as a USB printer and used the Generic PostScript Printer PPD file.

I was also able to print via the network by using the Generic PostScript Printer PPD file and choosing the "Print Directly to a Network Printer" and "Direct TCP Port Printing" connection options.

I don't know why there was a problem with using HPLIP and the printer-specific PPD file. If a developer or anyone else wants me to perform some further tests to track down that issue, then please get in touch.

Many thanks to everyone who provided assistance.

Going to leave open for now. Still working on a solution with HPLIP.

Thanks for the update though.

Try modifying the same location in the models.dat with the code below.

Also use the Color LaserJet 2800 postscript ppd. This worked for me. and we'll have a better solution in the future. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Using those changes to models.dat and the HP_Color_LaserJet_2800-ps.ppd.gz file worked.

I assume the 'HP Printer Test Page' that was printed is supposed to have a black rectangle demonstrating the printable area? The right-side of this rectangle was missing on my A4 paper, but the rest of the page looked great.

I didn't test network printing using the above setup. Do you want me to try that too?
