ubuntu hardy - HP m1522n device not supported in hp-toolbox

Asked by sunnnny

Hello,

All searches I made didn't match my problem, so here we go:

I recently purchased a HP m1522n MFP printer after my psc 21xx series died of old age. The m1522n is connected to my LAN, using a fixed IP adress. I can print using CUPS without any problems. But I also want to use hp-toolbox. The programm ist installed with all dependencies. But the GUI shows my printer with a red X and says "ERROR: No device found or unsupported device". As mentioned I can print and the printer shows up in hp-toolbox, thus found. I am using HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 2.8.2) / HP Device Manager ver. 11.0 - afaik the newest version which supports the m1522n MFP (at least it is listed on the supported device page on the according sourceforge page, also together with ubuntu hardy).

snmpwalk returns the following:
$ snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 192.168.1.2 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.9.1.1.7.0
enterprises.11.2.3.9.1.1.7.0 = STRING: "MFG:Hewlett-Packard;CMD:PJL,PML,PCLXL,POSTSCRIPT,PCL;MDL:HP LaserJet M1522n MFP;CLS:PRINTER;DES:Hewlett-Packard LaserJet M1522n MFP;MEM:MEM=53MB;COMMENT:RES=600x2;"

hp-check shows up only one error:
error: Unsupported model: HP_LaserJet_M1522n_MFP

So - why is it unsupported? Why can't i use hp-toolbox and its features?
And: When will there be scanning (at least over USB) be available? I specially baught the HP because I really liked the scanning/copy feature of my old psc and the HP page claimed that linux is a supported OS (mentioning no restrictions).

Thank you very much in advance.

best,
 Sunny

Hello!

Thank you for your reply. As mentioned above, I am using ver. 2.8.2.
Here the output of hp-check -t (with the error "unsuported device" also mentioned above):

$ hp-check -t

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 2.8.2)

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Hmm odd. If you edit the file

/usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat

search for the section "hp_laserjet_m1522n_mfp"

Is it there?

Hello!

I only can find the following sections about m1522 series printer:
[hp_laserjet_m1522_mfp]
[hp_laserjet_m1522nf_mfp]

I assume there is the root of the problem?
So a new section could solve it... could you paste it?

Now it's just about finding out, why it is not in this file on ubuntu hardy ;)

Relating my second question: Is there a way to access the scanner over USB as LAN scanning ("scan to pc") is not available yet?

Thank you very much so far

Best,
 Sunny

As for scanning it is not currently supported for this device. We are hoping to add it in the future...

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hello!

Thank you very much - this solved my problem. This entry made it work.

Great help!

I really hope scanning will be added soon as it's a very very important function in the MFP series which is required by many users out there.

It's a really a good Job you guys did there !!!

Any update on the status of this printer support? I just picked one up and after two days trying, I just realize that scanning is not supported. Should have check the support list first :(

I am afraid not :((

I am still waiting for scanning support... I really hope they will implement it soon or I will have to buy another device again... the only advantage HP had is gone without scanning.

FYI:

I just installed archlinux, including hplip 2.8.10 - I finally can scan using sane/xsane:
xsane hpaio:/net/HP_LaserJet_M1522n_MFP?ip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you @all developpers for giving us the opportunity to use the printer with all features under linux!!!!
