Can't add p3005 networked printer

Asked by fixitben

I am running on a RHEL 4 machine.

When I run hp-makeuri 172.16.10.99 it says
[root@aba5 ~]# hp-makeuri 172.16.10.99

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 2.8.5)
Device URI Creation Utility ver. 4.4

This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to distribute it
under certain conditions. See COPYING file for more details.

error: hp-makeuri should not be run as root.
error: Device not found

I can telnet to that IP but HPLIP doesn't see it.

Here is my Check hp-check -t

[bennie@aba5 ~]$ hp-check -t

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 2.8.5)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.0

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling theHPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependenciesare installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

From the hp-check hplip was installed with "network-build=no"

This will prevent the network functionality from working corectly.

Re-installing hplip and the missing dependencies (libsnmp-dev is required to compile with net support) should resolve this.
