Simplest photo print method from camera JPG

Asked by Jim Doyle

Hi there,

I've looked over the printing FAQ at http://hplip.sourceforge.net/howtos/printing.html, but I'm still a little confused about what methods of printing photos HPLIP can support.

I've got a Photosmart C5280 All-in-one, Ubuntu 6.06, and HPLIP 2.7.12. I want to figure out the simplest way to print a photo from a JPG copied from our digital camera, once we've got the printer switched to color photo ink and photo paper (4x6 with tear-off tab) loaded in the photo tray.

I've tested with the HP Device Manager and can successfully print the original JPG from that application (using Functions/Print) with good results if I set the Print Settings there to:

Page Size: Photo with tear-off tab
Printout Mode: Photo (on photo paper)
Media Source: Photo tray
Fit to Page: On

with defaults for everything else.

If I try to print the same JPG from the default image viewer for my Ubuntu desktop (Eye of Gnome 2.14.1), I get to set the following settings:

Paper size: Photo with tear-off tab
Paper tray: Photo Tray

and the job appears in HP Device Manager Print Control as "Printing". It stays there for a while, though, and eventually goes to "Stopped".

It would make the photo printing much easier for us to use if it worked from the default image viewer (EoG). That's where the printing FAQ confused me a little. Are you supposed to be able to print right from EoG?

If so, I'd like to gather whatever troubleshooting details are helpful and ask for help finding the problem.

If not, what is the simplest method? Printing from GIMP? Installing and using KVIEW instead?

Thanks!
Jim

I haven't had any luck getting eye of gnome to print to the photo tray even though it was selected. Using other image applications (gwenview) I was able to print to the photo tray with no problem. We don't have any control over the data the applications pass through and this would seem to be an application specific problem.

You may want to file a bug with the ubuntu team for eye of gnome and they might have a work around.

Sorry I couldn't help more, hope this gave you some direction!

Aaron
