parallel port HP business inkjet 2230 unusable with hpijs

Asked by Walter B. Rasmann

parallel port HP business inkjet 2230 unusable with hpijs

Once the HP business inkjet 2230 is turned on it only can accept the first print job. After finishing the first job it stops reacting / freezes with a blinking led and the display message "PRINTING" and/or "CANCELLING JOB" (where "READY" would be the normal state). It can continue printing only after powering the printer off and on again. This makes the printer completely unusable with hpijs.

The problem does not occur when printing from windows or using "Gutenprint v5.0.2", which
produces poor quality output. hpijs had worked some time ago, too. Unfortunately I can not tell when it broke...

Here are the settings I use:

Printer: HP2230_HPIJS

Description:
Location:
Printer Driver: HP Business Inkjet 2230 Foomatic/hpijs, hpijs 2.8.2.10 - HPLIP 2.8.2
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: parallel:/dev/lp0

Printer: HP2230 (Default Printer)

Description: HP2230
Location:
Printer Driver: HP Business Inkjet 2230 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.2
Printer State: idle, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: parallel:/dev/lp0

I use CUPS under debian unstable/sid:

ii hpijs 2.8.2+2.8.2-1
ii hpijs-ppds 2.8.2+2.8.2-1

Versions of packages hpijs depends on:

ii libusb-0.1-4 2:0.1.12-11 userspace USB programming library
(ii foomatic-db-hpijs 20080211-1)

I created a sid test system with debootstrap to install CUPS there. First I installed the debian hpijs/hpijs-ppds packages with their dependencies and then compiled and installed the last hplip release (2.8.5). Both produced the same problem as described above.

Printing from a knoppix 5.1.1 live cd, which apparently uses older packages, worked properly with hpijs.

Here are some of the package versions in Knoppix 5.1.1:

ii hpijs 2.6.10+1.6.10-3
ii foomatic-filters 3.0.2-20061031-1 linuxprinting.org printer support - filters

ii libusb-0.1-4 0.1.12-2 userspace USB programming library
(ii foomatic-db-hpijs 20061031-1)

Using different older hpijs ppds in debian/sid did not resolve the problem.

Any advice appreciated...

Thank you.

Please run hp-check -t and post the output.

Also please note that we primarily support the HPLIP release from http://hplip.sf.net. We don't support the prepackaged hplip by the distros because they can add/remove parts as they want and we can't be 100% what's been changed in all prepackaged versions.

If possible uninstall the hplip 2.8.2, install hplip 2.8.5 from our website and see if you have better results.

I have now installed hplip 2.8.5 from http://hplip.sf.net on a test system.

Unfortunately the results are the same. The printer stops working after printing the test page, for example.

I've also noticed another problem. When printing pdf files with embedded images, black squares are printed instead of some of the images. This problem does not occur with Gutenprint v5.0.2, either...

Here is the output of "hp-check -t":

I have downgraded following hpijs related packages on the main system

 hpijs [2.8.2+2.8.2-1 -> 2.6.10+1.6.10-4.2+lenny1]
 hpijs-ppds [2.8.2+2.8.2-1 -> 2.6.10+1.6.10-4.2+lenny1]
 hplip [2.8.2-1 -> 1.6.10-4.2+lenny1]
 foomatic-db [20080211-2 -> 20061031-1]
 foomatic-db-engine [3.0.2-2008 -> 3.0.2-2006]
 foomatic-db-hpijs [20080211-1 -> 20061031-1]
 foomatic-filters [3.0.2-2008 -> 3.0.2-2006]
 hplip-data [2.8.2-1 -> 1.6.10-4.2]

and replaced the ghostscript packages with some older ones

 gs-gpl [8.62.dfsg. -> 8.54.dfsg.]
 gs-esp 8.15.3.dfs

This solved the original problem (All print jobs are printed. "READY" is shown after printing). The black squares are still printed instead of some images (Print preview always shows the page correctly).

Unfortunately downgrading packages cannot be a permanent solution.

Any suggestions?

HPLIP was installed "pp-build=no". HPLIP needs to be re-installed with parallel support enabled. If you are installing using the automatic installer it will prompt to enable or disable parallel.

Thank you for the reply.

Unfortunately uninstalling, updating the system and recompiling with pp-build enabled did not solve the problem (Does pp-build change anything for hpijs at all?).

Black squares are still printed instead of the same images and the printer hangs after printing the first job in most cases.

Is there any hope for a solution?

Good Day

Assuming you're stil having issues on the test system...can you set the CUPS loglevel to debug and re-run a print job. The use pastebin.com or post back your /var/log/cups/error_log

thanks

Good Day

I've produced some logs:

First I printed the test page with the latest version of HPIJS, which makes the printer freeze with the PRINTING status after the page is output. So when I try to print the test page again, for example, nothing happens. The cancel button has no effect then. After I turn off and back on the printer, it proceeds printing something, which then could be canceled - usually some black strips and sometimes some codes along with this like "*p502Y". After this the printer is in the READY state and works (for the next job) again. Here is the according piece of log:

page_log1 <http://pastebin.com/m2618efcc>
error_log1 <http://pastebin.com/m5a8b1e9a>

Then I printed a pdf document. Some images, which are on pages 2 and 3 here, are printed as black squares. (The printer also like usually when printing graphics under linux uses too much ink, so that the paper comes out pretty wet...). However after this job the printer did not freeze.
Here is the according log:

page_log2 <http://pastebin.com/m56217f18>
error_log2 <http://pastebin.com/m618f4ac8>

Then I printed a simple text file with a few lines as root with HPIJS. This made it freeze again.
Here is the log:

page_log3 <http://pastebin.com/m4aa36f>
error_log3 <http://pastebin.com/m651e7bed>

Then I restarted the printer and tested it with Gutenprint 5.0.2 again. All the jobs were printed in a somewhat poorer quality but without freezing and black squares. I did not cut the error_log properly here, so it shows only some part of job 22.

page_log_g <http://pastebin.com/m6137fc6>
error_log_g <http://pastebin.com/m331151c7>

Here is the hp-check -t output again:

hp-check.log <http://pastebin.com/m62860633>

Surprisingly it found the printer on the parallel port this time, which usually does not happen. (I also could not reproduce it.)

I installed the printer as a HPLIP printer first with the URL "hp:/par/HP_BUSINESS_INKJET_2230?device=/dev/parport" and then with "hp:/dev/parport0", which produces interesting errors. However, this is known to be not supported...
Here are the logs anyway:

error_log_hplip <http://pastebin.com/m369c036d> (with [cups-driverd] removed)
syslog_hplip <http://pastebin.com/m467b64a5>

I will supply additional info, if needed.

Thank you very much,

Walter

Yes, I can print properly. But currently only under Windows.

I can print with Gutenprint 5.0.2 in a rather poor quality, but without having to turn the priter on and off each time.

I cannot print properly with HPIJS at all, as I described in the last posting.

This means, the HP2230 Business Inkjet Parallel is not supported by HPIJS anymore.

If you do not regard it feasible to do anything about this, please write that you are ceasing support for the parallel edition of HP2230.

Thank you

You have not build hplip with parallel support. It looks like you installed via distro package. True?
