New HP P1006 printer, no Ubuntu driver

Asked by Andrew M Sorenson

I just bought a new printer so I could use Ubuntu (I couldn't find Ubuntu drivers for my good Canon) I have tried to 'install' software and can't get anywhere. I am not a computer geek. I tried using the CD that came with the printer and I didn't see any simple place to start, "Install" file. I couldn't make sense of it. I tried getting a Linux driver but the printer apparently doesn't 'see' it. If I use a Ubuntu driver, do I even Need the HP CD? How do I get the printer to 'see' the driver. (I Do see a file on the start up screen, 'hplip-2.8.4.run')

I would like to get my P1006 operating. Help toward getting it going would be Greatly appreciated.

The HP LaserJet P1006 is supported as of HPLIP 2.8.2.

http://hplip.sourceforge.net/models/laserjet/hp_laserjet_p1006.html

You can download the driver from our website, http://hplip.sf.net

The automatic installer works great with ubuntu.

Aaron,
Thankyou for your help.
I see a file on the 'desktop', ' hplip-2.8.5.run ' but I click on it and nothing happens. I don't know how to open a window to type in 'run'. I am still dead in the water.
Can you help me some more please??
Thankyou,
Drew
