Scanning over network from HP Color LaserJet 2840 gives "Error during device I/O"

I have HP Color LaserJet 2840 attached to my computer via network. When I try to scan, I get "Error during device I/O", but I cannot understand why. Printing works fine.
I'm using Debian GNU/Linux unstable with HPLIP version 2.8.2(-1)

How can I get more detailed reason why scanning fails, or even better, how do I get it to work?

If possible please try with HPLIP 2.8.4. Also you are missing network dependencies for hplip to function correctly using a network device:

We've tested the 2840 extensively with 2.8.4 and haven't had any problems..so I think installing the latest hplip should resolve this.

I tried to install libsnmp-dev from Debian unstable, and after that hp-check stopped crying. However after that I purged that package, and noticed that I had modified SNMP settings of the printer. By resetting those to defaults, scanning works fine.

But I really think that development headers (libsnmp-dev) are only needed for compiling hplip, not for using. At least it works fine for me without those now when SNMP settings are correct.
