hplip suse 10.3

Asked by Boruch Hashem

We have an Athlon-64-3000 on ASUS mother board w/ 3 GB ram. Runs great. Was using Suse 10.0

Now we updated to Suse 10.3 (using 64 bit)

Just bought HP P1006 laser printer

Downloaded the hplip 2.8.2 and tried to install it both ways, using sh hplip-2.8.2.run and also by untarring the tarball and using ./install.py

it started by uncompressing the files, and then asked what mode of install.
I tried both the automatic and the custom.
it then went to "initializing, please wait. Got a few twirls of the line and then it stopped.
I waited 20 minutes, but nothing.
I looked on Xosview and it showed the CPU at 100% use, but nothing else was running.
I did a ctrl-c and it said "error:aborted" and the CPU usage slowed down, to normal

This has been going on for a while now. I work out of town, so I work on it when I am home (not too often)

I just downloaded the hplip-2.8.4.run and thought that might help.

it did not. it still runs and runs but never installs.

I went into Yast2 and deleted the hplip that was installed when I did the update. That did not help the problem

In yast I also looked and it sees the printer on the USB port and properly identifies it. But if I try to print something to it, it is not listed in the print listing in open office, and if I click on printer, it goes but nothing ever happens.

thanks for your help

It seems that there are lots of problems with the suse 10.3 release as it also has a problem with wvdial as it wipes out the /dev/null file. I did fix it before I tried to install the HP print driver.

thanks and take care. Hopefully we can get this to work and the family will be happy.

Lets try running the install manually,

Download the hplip-2.8.4.tar.gz

cd hplip-2.8.4

And post the output.

Hi Boruch,

I had the same problem, when I tried to run the HPLIP-installer. It is something with python, that is catching the CPU (look at the output of 'top -u(youruser)'

Try it with the HPLIP-RPM. I've posted the source here:

https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/30598

And install too: phyton-gobject2

Taht works for Opensuse 10.3
