Can not see Photosmart 3310 on my network to install it in Fedora 8

Asked by walterwood4

I am trying to setup my Photosmart 3310 in Fedora 8. The printer is on the same wired LAN as the Linux box and has the IP address 192.168.1.110.

I ran HPLIP 2.8.2 and it does not find the printer. In HPLIP I also tried the Advanced and Find again not finding the printer. How can I get Fedora to see and setup this printer?

The printer works find under XP and Vista.

Thanks
Walter

1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Hi walter,

I think that it is better, if we use the right terms for good help:

From you: "I ran HPLIP 2.8.2 and it does not find the printer." If you run hplip, you compile and install everthing neccesary for printing with hp-printers. If you want to work with a hp-printer, you first have to run hp-setup (as root), later you have to use hp-toolbox (as user), both part of the installation-package. What did you do?

I just installed a network-printer on 3 computers. Two of them not finding them automatically, but with "find manual" and inserting the ip-number, both had the printer.

Your system is not configured correctly for printing to a network printer. You are missing many required dependencies--including net-snmp-devel which is the one required for network printing.

Please install the latest hplip from source from out website; http://hplip.sf.net or install the missing packages manually using the code below.

su -c "yum -y -d 10 -e 1 install cupsddk cupsddk-drivers cupsddk-devel"
su -c "yum -y -d 10 -e 1 install cups-devel"
su -c "yum -y -d 10 -e 1 install gcc-c++"
su -c "yum -y -d 10 -e 1 install openssl-devel"
su -c "yum -y -d 10 -e 1 install libjpeg-devel"
su -c "yum -y -d 10 -e 1 install net-snmp-devel"
su -c "yum -y -d 10 -e 1 install glibc-headers"
su -c "yum -y -d 10 -e 1 install libtool"
su -c "yum -y -d 10 -e 1 install libusb-devel"
su -c "yum -y -d 10 -e 1 install python-devel"
su -c "yum -y -d 10 -e 1 install sane-backends-devel"

Thanks.

Hartmut and Aaron,

I appreciate your help. While I am new to Linux I am not new to computers or networking.

I ran HPLIP and HP-setup. HP Device Manager does not automatically find the printer on the network. I also tried Advance and Find Manually with HP Device Manager.

After posting previously I noticed the missing packages and have installed them. Tried everything listed above again and the printer is still not found.

I tried to ping the printer from the Linux box and the packets were lost. I also tried pinging the Linux box from a Vista computer and the packets were also lost. The Linux box can surf the Internet and it on the same LAN. Could this be a firewall issue. I checked the firewall settings but did not see anything that seemed unusual. I did allow Samba so i could see my Windows printer but that did not make a difference.

Thanks,
Walter

Hi Walter,

forget the printer for now. Seems that you have a network-problem. Solve this and try the printer again.

You can ping with a closed firewall, because you recieve answers and those will get through the wall. Check your network, it must be possible, that every machine (including printer) in the network can be pinged from every other. If that works, then try installing your printer.

Hartmut

Can you help with this problem?
