the instructions for the automatic installer are missing from the website

Asked by John Paton

The instruction on the website for the automatic installer are still incomplete and appear exactly as they did in 2009 when cat2005 asked about this issue (79262). The original question is marked as answered but the answer seems to be 'the issue has been resolved'.

This is clearly not the case since the website still has no list of commands to type at the terminal prompt.

Can somebody please tell me what the commands are. I have downloaded the latest .run file but have no idea what to do with it.

Just run the following command and answer the prompts on the terminal. There are no elaborate instructions. Its very easy

For instance if you have downloaded the latest "hplip-3.16.5.run", then type the following command and press "Enter"

     "sh hplip-3.16.5.run"

The instructions are still missing from the website. "It's easy when you know how" doesn't help when you're searching high and low for the missing instructions rather than bother the forum. Isn't there something about having to be in the right directory ? This is as far as I've got so far:

gordon@north:~$ cd ~/Desktop
gordon@north:~/Desktop$ sh hplip-3.16.5
sh: 0: Can't open hplip-3.16.5
gordon@north:~/Desktop$

I'm certainly in a directory containing hplip because when I'm not I get "no such file or directory"

Any ideas please ? I'm using 14.04
Thanks

The filename is wrong. It should be "hplip-3.16.5.run". Please look for that file at your desktop or in Downloads folder.
and then run "sh hplip-3.16.5.run"

Good point ! However, this is the latest

gordon@north:~$ cd ~/Desktop
gordon@north:~/Desktop$ sh hplip-3.16.5run
sh: 0: Can't open hplip-3.16.5run

The directory is correct:
