no image out of XSane

Asked by gilles

All these answers are rather dated. As of today, I can't seem to match XSane and hplip. XSane will get my scanner going (OfficejetPro 8600-N911a), but does not produce any image.

Hi Sanjay,

Not doing well at all. I managed to get some stuff done in terminal,
but not all. No idea about the PGP key. This is all confusing to me.
I was using Mint 17.1 Rosa with hplip gui before. All was very good.
I ran a completely new installation with Mint 17.3 KDE. I am not so
comfortable with the KDE desktop, but I persisted and managed to
install the printer with hplip gui, but the scanner and fax are
nowhere to be found. I even went to the HP web site, to attempt a
remote scanner/fax install. No joy there either. I forget what their
message was. One dependency that seems to be missing is
hp-fax4-hpcups.ppd. I have downloaded hplip 3.15.11, but it's just
sitting in my Download folder, and terminal tells me that it cannot
open it. hplip upgrade in Konsole tells me that I have the latest
version, without mentioning it exactly. As for the .run file, it
beats me. What command line am I suppose to use in Konsole terminal
to install it?

As you can see Sanjay, I am not doing very good. At the moment, the
printer (OfficeJet Pro 8600-n911a) is working all right. For scans, I
just use a flash drive and walk it over to my laptop. Not ideal but
hey, it gets me by. I can always dream of my old Mint 17.1 Rosa
Mate/hplip setup. Oh well. I'm running a 3 year old Acer laptop with
an Intel core B940 processor.

Thanks Sanjay for any light that you can throw on my lantern.

Hi Gilles,

HPLIP with Mint 17.3 support was released 4 days back only (in version 3.16.2). Can you again try steps mentioned in http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html.

Once HPLIP-is installed (Step 1 - Step10), please open the terminal and run "xsane" command to perform scan operations. Your scanner will be detected automatically.

Thanks,
Sanjay
